What do you do for a living?

Love my job, and hope I get to travel one day.
Hosting, coordinating and managing the CAD drawings between the various consultants.

My first major responsibility in this company when I joined as Technical Procurement was to manage drawings and cad files between the Design department, the buying staff and the suppliers.
Thought it would be easy peasy, just ensure the suppliers have the latest drawings and job done.
But no, there are literally thousands of drawings per job, multiple states and versions to keep track of that change constantly plus the IP debacle with buyers not allowed to save or share drawings without my permission.
Was a nightmare with hundreds of things being ordered every day.

Yeah that sounds like a pain.

So my aim is, let's say it is a hospital, we host the main model. This model is then shared to the multiple architects, designers, interior designers and drafting technicians. They all work on the same file.

Once the structure is sorted, we send an IFC file format to the engineer, drainage designer, electrical, HVAC, surveyors, estimators etc.

They add their information to the IFC file and export it again. We import the file and map it to the main project file. Check for modifications. Do clash detection (pipes going through beams, beams going through beams, pipe clearances etc).

So you have a single file that is always updated and all the other consultants need to make sure their drawing are updated to match the latest file.

But there is so much more to it. Adding someone with some Python knowledge and algorithm design, we can create facades and layouts and traffic flow over 100's of stories in a couple of hours or days. Previously it would literally take years and and a load of people. Now it can be done with a small team and a couple of weeks.

Interesting, I would have thought shared hosting would be a included feature in things like Autodesk or Inventor?
 
I hated working in 2D. BIM was already going back then with Graphisoft. Has come a long way since then. Autodesk eventually moved form Autocad to Revit.

I gave Revit a go a few weeks back to plan/build a BOM for DIY dry walling and insulation. I quickly learnt it would be faster on pen and paper than trying to get up to speed on the software. Damn powerful tooling though! Totally not aimed at the weekend warriors.

You you should maybe use Sketchup. Super simple, but powerful for small projects.

I am responsible for calibration, maintenance, repair and daily operation of analytical equipment, both laboratory based and online analysers. These include Gas Chromatographs, Constant Wave Cavity Ring-down Spectrometers and Magnetic Sector Mass Spectrometers.
