< 200k /y as an intern "full stack developer " with no qualifications at a multinational. Do I think I'm under paid? Yes but I understand I'm an expense at the moment. I will get another job next year if the CTC doesn't match what I'm worth.

Why the interest?

Also this thread is similar.

What's your worth if any company you start at you'd be an expense till you have a grounded skill set?

As I mentioned in the other thread just get experience. The money will come.

You should be more specific

"in South Africa"

as many ran off to the Netherlands and I assume getting much more than here.
EU and ZA salaries are really comparable at the top end - especially if you work for a big financial institution or multi national.

I know of several people here earning more in ZAR than they would in EU (NL, DE) as examples.

I disagree with that one unless eastern Europe tbh, top end south Africa caps mostly 1.5m per annum, I know people here earning above that quite easily.

Netherlands that's what I'd earn as a normal senior (from offers I've seen, but might be biased).

You can say cost of living adjusted maybe, or specialized field if you can find the market in south Africa, but generally that's not the norm.

There are SA devs earning 1.5m+ and those at a FAANG level or finance level with RSU and stock are earning even more (hell SA financial institutions are doing 300-400k+ bonuses too). Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it's not happening.

Hell I just had a colleague turn down an EU job in NL, just because he's paid more here in ZAR.

True true. Experienced the same

That’s really cool for SA, but really out of touch for the high end in Europe.

My brother in law Earned more in ZA than in Swedan. He has no way to go up at his company which is Volvo, his as high as he can go as dev and last increase was R2000 after tax. As the tax man takes pretty much everything in Swedan.

I have 2 ex colleagues in Sweden and I out earn both.

Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Germany - judging by both offers received (and ex colleagues) are all paying less than I'd earn in ZA. Of course there are the caveats of you don't need a car or private medical or or or - but it's not as attractive financially as it once was.

There was a time when if I moved to JHB I could make 50% more without. blinking, that's no longer a thing - and in certain cases for a lot of Europe it isn't either.

To attract and retain top talent in ZA you have to pay, otherwise they'll emigrate.

I give you examples NL and DE - you guys then go NOT ALL OF EUROPE... :X3:
Really now...
You were using it as support for your statement about the EU. It’s not even true in NL.

Not really, top end as far as I can see is Uber / Booking at 120k euro - which is just over 2 mil ZAR.

That's achievable here at the top end.
