Hey guys

We've just had a long chat here about our dogs, after one guy said his dog doesn't eat bones. I said I feed mine raw bones every day (lovely form of distraction when we're leaving for work) and was told it's bad for them (but they're still going to get them).

Other things that came up was not to feed them bobtail gravy (would you feed them something you wouldn't eat yourself?), or ground up bones / sawdust that you get from a butcher. Rather make up beef / chicken / vegetable stock and pour some over their food each night. Also don't feed them tinned food (forget why).

I have a Golden Retriever, Fayth. 11yrs old, Service Dog, almost retired. And a mutt, 1.5yrs old, TJ. Fayth is on Hills J/D for her arthritis.
TJ will eat her food at any opportunity he gets. He will only eat his food if he really has to. Some days, he won't eat any pellets at all. He's thin, probably around 6kg, which is about his ideal weight anyway. Thing is he's so active that I worry about him sometimes. I'm now mixing some tinned food (PnP No name) with water and soaking pellets in it before giving it ho him. So far it's a fairly good hit.

What do you feed your dogs? What do you consider as good or bad for your pets?

Samp, chicken necks, and chicken livers or other offal cooked overnight in a slow cooker served up with dry dog food.

Vet says its a balanced diet, my four dogs love it and so does my wallet. :)

I have a dog thats a fussy eater - use Ekanuba Lamb and Rice - and she now gobbles it down. Her condition has improved drastically. Might seem expensive, but when comparing how much to feed compared to the other dry foods - works out a bit cheaper.

I have great Danes- they tend to have problems with their joints- the adopted one already has arthiritis and he is only two- they get Vet's choice large breed- cost me a fortune as they go through 20kg a week- but as soon as i feed them anything else their conditions deteriorate nearly immediately. they seldom get "human food" as they end up with runny tummies- which is not something u want with 3 danes- to get them a bit fatter I do feed them ox livers mixed with pap on a sunday.Except for the adopted one with the hip problem the others are in perfect condition!!!!!!!

Little Couch dog, Dutch Hound aka Worshond.

Little thing only eats pallets, some of those little R8 pouches (he gets 10 pouches a month) and well he gets some table food. but not alot. Since these dogs are long they cannot/should not have a big tummy. Cause u know the building design is like a bridge... Some time or another that bridge is gonna colapse.. lol. So we try to keep him standard / correct weight.

I've had a couple great danes and one had a really dodgy tummy from birth. Tripe and rice was a good combination for him. My other one could, and did, eat anything without a problem.

I also gave my dogs a bone each in the morning to ease my leaving for work. I did not see any problems with them.

Try having a Bull Terrier... damn thing eats anything and everything and will still come back for 5ths if we give him the option. Voracious damn vacuum cleaner...but he's my vacuum cleaner....

We try to feed him pedigree, except he gets all snobby sometimes and will only eat what we eat....

Pedigree and Husky Chunky mixed together, once a day.
Beeno's for a treat in the morning.

Some tit bits from our table. :)

Fayth has anxiety problems. If she's away from me too long, she chews herself silly. I'll leave the house, then ZA_Medic will give them bones and let them into the yard. So far, we're up to leaving her at home 3 days in a row without signs of anxiety build-up. Next week, we'll be leaving her at home the whole week as well - 4 days. Touch wood it goes well. Before you ask, she needs to retire. She's a working dog that has to learn to stay at home. Her arthritis is also becoming another reason why she needs to settle at home. We've tried it before, but up to now, been unsuccessful. Contributing factors as well, I think are the fact we're in a complex and there's often some kind of activity going on.

My daschund gets Vets CHoice? or Hills, not sure which brand, but the Hypoallergenic one at R120 a pop for 2 kg's. She had some allergies and it was suggested we use that, allergies have gone now. Problem now is that the rest of the gang think its the best food ever, so we have to monitor them, otherwise I'll be forking our R120 a day for dog food.

Ah yes.... had a similar problem with a dalmation that I got from the SPCA a long time ago. He would have fits when we'd leave the house. Took us a LONG time to get him to be ok with us leaving, but he'd still always go beserkly happy when we'd get back home...

My two staffies only gets Pedigree, and a beeno each in the morning. The rest of the day they trim my garden for me.

Beeno every morning Chicken and rice at night, Mince and rice,Friskies steak pellets, alternate every other day...

Dogs are carnivores - like wolves and Wild dogs. If you are feeding them samp, rice, bread, chocolates and other gunk, no wonder so many dogs are fat and sickly looking!

Skeptik, I'm well aware of that ... both of my dogs are healthy (except for the arthritis, but that's old age). They both get pellets daily and raw bones almost every day. But as I said, the one (TJ) is a picky eater, so hence this thread to see what everyone else feeds their dogs.

BTW, did you never see that Oreo advert? "Chocolate isn't good for dogs, but you can have the rest of my milk." :D
