What do you use Tasker for?

The same issue persisted on 4.1.2 which I'm on as well. Secure settings is a great add-on for Tasker and well worth it. Very simple to install and use, but make sure you follow the secure settings instructions for busy box properly...

Just installed - worked instantly. I just opted for the 'normal' install of BusyBox, not having spotted any particular instructions in SS for that install. Hopefully something has simply changed, rather than my having missed important instructions!

In my advanced options I recall it asking me to do something or another before the Secure Settings installation (which was also normal). I know this isn't helpful at all, but thought I'd share. :D

If the options are now available under the plugins settings for Tasker tasks then you're good to go, I suppose...

Wow, definitely going to use Tasker more... Quite an elaborate (and impressive) setup you have there DJ...

Not bad for a non-geek, hey?

I basically just googled around and followed some instructions, and picked up along the way what each function was actually doing. Don't ask me to code anything, but I can sort of manipulate existing code, kinda like how I taught myself macros on Excel...

You have an automated smartphone setup, yet are not a geek? :p

How long did it take you to get this setup going?

I need some help setting up Tasker to:

Turn on wifi once near certain Cell ID's
Turn off wifi when not near certain Cell ID's
Turn on Mobile data when not on Wifi
Turn off Mobile data when connected via Wifi

So far I have only managed to do the 1st one - my end tasks don't seem to work

Need to confirm but I doubt that turning 3g off while connected to wifi saves any battery.

Not sure how to do it in Tasker, but I used to use Llama to do this- much simpler...

Simple in tasker.

Create new profile. Select state. Select phone. Select cell near. Select scan. It will scan nearby cell towers and store the info. Then create relevant tasks to perform when near or not near those towers.

If you're having trouble with exit tasks then do it manually again. Click the relevant profile. Long click the associated tasks list on the bottom right. Select exit task. Put in whatever you like. I prefer to create my tasks separately and then simply add the appropriate task to a profile, as opposed to creating new tasks while creating profiles...

Nice thread I only discovered now.

Here's one I just created with some inspiration from LG G2's knock-knock feature. It relies on Nova launcher's gestures.

Create a new task in tasker > Display > System Lock

Then in Nova, go to Gestures and Button > Double tap > Shortcuts > Task Shortcut > Selech the task you created > assign an icon for the task (I'm not sure why this last step is required).

I like this as it is faster to lock the phone and saves my power button in the long run.

How did you manage to figure out how to set up Tasker like this??? I had it installed but it does take lots of time to figure out how to use it.

Any info will be appreciated.

I recently started playing with Tasker and I love it. Here's how I'm using it at the moment:

Reads out my news and weather each morning at 7am then switches to my music app and plays a playlist. I need to figure out a way to route this audio to my surround sound in the bedroom but it doesn't look likely based on the digging I've done. EDIT: Air Audio works well for this.

Switches on Wi-Fi when I hit a certain set of cell towers near my house and welcomes me home when it connects to my home Wi-Fi. Only between certain times of day. Also opens yatse for media centre control.

Only switches on GPS for certain apps and switches it off when they close.

Checks my account balances every two hours during the day and announces that it its doing so. Can monitor rogue usage this way.

Shake to switch on torch.

Battery saving profiles defined and automated based on time of day, battery status and location.

If a failed phone security pin is entered from the lock screen, the following actions take place: force GPS on. Take pic with front and rear camera. Wait 20 seconds for GPS lock. Switch off GPS and send me a text msg with date, time, Google maps location, battery status, Wi-Fi details and cell tower location. Upon receipt of sms the phone announces a security breach.

Same thing happens if I send an sms to the phone with a certain phrase except it send to multiple numbers.

Plugging in headphones opens a list of audio apps to choose from.

Swiping across the face of the phone switches profiles.

Spoken battery full alerts to take off charge. Repeats every 10 min. Only during certain times of the day.

I still might try to integrate with auto remote and auto notifications at a later point but it gets quite complicated. I'd also like to start some home automation projects with it and perhaps use done nfc tags.

So what do you do with Tasker?

Check YouTube for the Tasker tutorials hosted by XDA Developers. They do a pretty comprehensive job of covering all of Tasker's features.

I just played with it and discovered what all of the functions are that way. I also googled for the best tasker scripts and copied a few that required coding, which I cannot do.

But I mostly just did it myself using ideas from others and thinking of what I wished my phone could do. Also installed Secure Settings and BusyBox which adds more functionality to it. I actually found it quite intuitive to be honest. It's just finding the locations of the tasks you wish to perform - that can be a bit tricky as they're hidden in vast menus...

Thanks guys. Will do some researching.

This is neat, any idea if it can be used to wake up a device as well?

Yeah, unfortunately it seems quite impossible. That functionality has to be engineered at the level of the kernel. There are some kernels for the Nexus 4 that enabled this, but it sounds like it is not quite seamless. For me with a GS4, there is no way to achieve this.
