Is there any use in getting an Ipad if I hardly ever travel (and I am always close to a computer or my ipod touch)?

i like taking mine to the toilet to watch videos or read comics while i do my business.

Reading books + online radio mostly. Also use it to make notes in lectures.... its more of a paper saving device really :)

Hopefully will be able to tell you in 7-14 working days :D

Casual browsing around the house
Reading news and articles / magazines
Chatting with friends / Skype (especially now that iMEssage is out)
To show clients mockups for websites
Taking notes during meetings / conferences
Watching videos in bed
As remote control (I have this https://store.griffintechnology.com/beacon?utm_source=cj&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=dijit)
As an oversized GPS with TomTom (and the recently released optimized iPad version).

It even came in handy in the bank once - I didn't have proof of residence with me and I could show the lady it directly on the iPad.

I realize most of this I will be able to do with an iPhone as well, but I've had a blackberry for a while (waiting to upgrade to the 4s as soon as it is available).

LOL wow dude, how long are you on the bog for? I remember when i was younger my grandparents would take a newspaper and be in there like an hour .

My tablet makes a great paper weight, not sure why i bought one actually. I always buy tech stuff i never use

Although i suspect an ipad would be rather awesome :D.

They went into the toilet together?

No they would both sit on the bog for ages reading the paper :D, at separate times :p. Never understood how peeps can spend so much time there, perhaps i just got a good system :p

Does the ipad 2 make use of skype?

Web browsing in bed
Forum hopping
Youtube videos
Dont spent much time on my pc anymore, most of the stuff can be done on my ipad!

@People who use it for notes etc, what apps you using for this(Uni related), i guess i could record my lectures but would i ever listen to them? lol

I use my Tab for mostly Mail. Company mail via Touchdown for Exchange and Personal with Gmail.
The FNB Banking app works very well. Common banking tasks faster than on a PC.
Also have Remote desktop via 2X and an SSh/Telnet client.

WhatsApp doesn't really run 100% (contacts issue) but does work if you fiddle enough.

General browsing if out of the office/home or at friends though I don't use it much for that.

Occasionally read an ebook on it.

With the right programs or apps, just about anything. From text editing to spreadsheets. I was VERY against the idea of using and iPad over a laptop, but since I bought an iPad I have sold my laptop. It's a different way of working. I bought the 32gb iPad from Digicape in Cape Town, and I'm sold on the idea. This with the introduction of the iCloud has changed the way I work.

e-book reader for my uni textbooks and have supporting apps for my formulas and other cheat sheet things like code. Also remote access to my pc and access to my cloud files.

We have both the iPad 2 and the Xoom. I use the Xoom but have tested out the iPad, prefer the Xoom for its widgets and especially when it had free and seamless integration with google docs before iCloud came (which still doesn't change anything lol).

@Freaksta: the built in note taker is pretty good enough as your just taking down notes, you can seriously blitz on that keyboard once your used to it, faster than writing. I have additionally a mind map program and i use a to-do list app called wunderlist, same as evernote and the new reminders on iOS but its syncs cross platform like evernote and simpler to use, was also around before iOS 5 came out with reminders. If you're studying engineering, sciences or chemistry then there are quite a few useful apps out there, a periodic table of elements for one, unit converters are a must, especially when the author of a textbook decides to use imperial instead of metric units. I know there are sound apps for music students that are supposedly a must. You must make it a habit to use the calendar function for things like tests, can seriously save your ass.

As I read through this thread, I realize that I am using my Desire HD to do all of the above. That can be why I can't convince myself to buy a tablet. I still need to find something I use that can only be done on a tablet.

Primarily consumption, more convenient and lighter than a laptop. I previously used my phone for this, but the size of the tablet is for me the best compromise between mobility and screen size. Yes it is a compromise, not as good as a laptop and not as portable as a phone, but still there's something really great about them.

Android mostly for consuming media in bed or controlling the TV or XBMC. When I travel I normally take it instead of a laptop (Transformer with Keyboard)

iPad in the John for reading or on the couch for playing games (Android lacks in game numbers) Ipad sometimes end up as a second display on PC or controller for Photoshop.

That second display app looks cool.

With this FNB special also looking for a reason to buy a Tablet but I just can't seem to justify it :/

That happens to everyone, it's difficult to justify, but once you own one you will wonder how you ever coped without one.

You know.... I've got a similar size cellphone to that (galaxy s2), and reading on that vs reading on the iPad is night and day. The spaciousness, the ability to take proper annotation and links through documents...it's just so much nicer. That's why I'm lining up to get an iPad2 rather.
