I hope someone can help me please.
What does a databundle provide over and above the fact that I can connect to the internet in any case with a prepaid SIM (on Vodacom a least, but possibly others as well).
Thanks

Exactly. So if you spend it simply for the sake of knowing that you have it, or loose it for not using it, it may be more expensive.
Thus if you are in add hoc situations where you need access to data for backup purposes (not know when or how much, rarely), the prepaid card most likely is the cheapest.

A once-off payment of R399, gets you 3GB of data valid for 365 days
60GB+60GB package for R1,800 once-off payment. The data is valid for 12 months and the full 120GB is allocated up-front.
Brilliant.
You start a thread to ask a question and you answer yourself, accept you are correct and that's it.

No limitation regarding speed. Fastest device you have, better utilisation of network bandwith.Ay. What I did not know is if there are speed or connection limitations, like not allowed to connect with HSDPA etc.
It used to be, but they did away with the speed difference in about April 2010. The only difference now between Broadband Standard and Broadband Advanced is the out-of-bundle rate. Not sure if the answer about speed restrictions is actually correct -- at least on Vodacom, where you are offered two different flavours of prepaid data bundles when you apply: Standard or Advanced, with a price difference. I always assumed that meant if you intended to have high-speed access (where available) you had to go for the Advanced. Is that still the case?
