Hi
So I want to open a credit card account with FNB. Is there any account worth going for..? I'm not clued up at all with regards to their products so if there anybody who has account with them I would appreciate the input.

(FWIW 98% of my purchases will probably still be from my Capitec account but online purchases etc normally need a credit card)

I've got a silver card with them even though I qualify for gold, I dont think theres any difference between the 2 cards besides the 'status' and the monthly fees being cheaper on silver :)

Go for the cheque account, but there is an option they have whereby there are no banking fees if the sum of R9000.00 is present in your account during the entire month. If you can, I would save on the bank fees.

You have to ask them about it though like I did and there will be a lot of confusion as the assistant will go over the website, records, etc. Eventually you will probably get it.

Go for the cheque account with the unlimited option. Gold if you qualify. It costs R99, but all transactions at FNB are free, incl cash deposits, inContact and Internet banking.

I have never seen the purpose of getting a credit card, and then still spending on your debit card. Credit cards are great for rewards, if you choose the right card. I put every purchase I make, no matter how big or how small, on my credit card. And ALWAYS make sure I pay it off before I pay any interest on it.

Some of the platinum cards have great rewards. But secondly, and most importantly, the gold card will have a higher credit limit than silver etc. Which depending on your monthly spend, if your credit limit is too low, it means you have to transfer money onto the card more than once a month.

What on earth is the point of getting a cheque account? He already has a transactional account at Capitec. The OP want to make purchases online. You can do that with a credit card, and the fees are minimal compared to cheque accounts.

So what card do you recommend then...? And what are the rewards exactly...? I have no qualms about spending on the credit card and then pretty much immediately paying it off.

I'm on FNB Platinum card (all levels depend on your income) and I earn major ebucks - put ALL purchases on cr card then pay off full balance - eBucks is pretty much cash nowadays - it covers all my banking fees and then some! Also the platinum service is excellent too and you can apply online and there are all sorts of other freebies - travel insurance, slow lounge access at airports, and more). they've got a great wizard on their site that can "help you choose" https://www.fnb.co.za/credit-card/index.html

Your doing something wrong... Are you sure its not interest your paying?

No one else I have heard of has ever paid annual or monthly fees with Virgin money credit cards.

Must be interest, or he's drawing cash at atm's about 20 times a month.

The only fees I've ever paid at Virgin are R3.50 a few times on their garage card.

I think he's very confused.

It all depends on how much you spend and how much you earn. The card you choose depends on your lifestyle, and what rewards are important to you. I have a FNB Platinum cheque account, which gives me the benefits that mcarte mentioned (mainy SLOW lounge :D). And then I chose to have Discovery's credit card (FNB), which suits me because I shop at pick n pay, fly kulula, fly BA (emirates now available too), rent cars once in a while, have used the contiki benefit numerous times...so all in all I get more discounts that what my medical aid and card fees cost every year. Then I also earn Discovery Miles which I generally convert into BA miles every year, but can also be used for a myriad of things. Oh and because they are both FNB, only one internet banking logon, and transfers are instant.

Other rewards cards to look at are: BA (standard bank), SA Voyager (nedbank and diners), Vodacom, Edgars, Woolworths etc.

But all reward cards only actually pay off if you pay them off in full every month before paying interest. Discovery's interest fees are terrible!

And as people said, there are cards with no fees, like Virgin Money. But I hate ABSA.

I haven't mentioned the FNB card becuase it has been discussed extensively. I have nothing against FNB, quite like them. Ebucks are ok too. I just prefer earning air miles.

Ja, I also don't get it. Swiping is free.
