I've been using my HTC3600i with TomTom 6 and find it really good, but have decided to get a standalone unit on my next trip to the US.
I was tempted to buy the TomTom top of the line model from BestBuy, but looking at the selection on display it was clear that the TomTom screen brightness was lacking compared to the others although it came with US and UK/Europe maps.

I need to use it in SA, UK and the US.

I'm leaning towards the top of the range Garmin Nuvi at this stage - what would you recommend?

I'm keen on getting this Garmin Nuvi 770
I'm also contemplating paying the $90 to ship it to me in SA or wait till I'm in the US in March.

It comes with Europe and US maps, but where do you suggest I get the SA maps ?

my dads got the latest they have in sa , i think its the 760 , its good but overated , the only difference is that it pronounces the street names , which i dont fancy since its an american guy trying to pronounce street names in south africa that have changed .
it does have the new street names but instead of saying the old street names which most are english words , they now try very hard to pronounce the new names , dont sound good at all.
i wont waste the 5 or 6 grand asking price when the nuvi 200 does the exact same basic function , getting you from a to b.
its smaller , compact and easier to use at a much cheaper price , you can just update the maps as you need to.
btw , he also has the nuvi 200 which i prefer to use on my road trips.

I bought Tomtom 720 and very happy with it. It works flawlessly and looks good too. If I wanted a basic unit, I would have bought a Garmin Nuvi.

Rectron are the current TomTom agents. Get a price on those maps first, you might be in for a grand or more.

I'm happy with my nuvi 200, because I think the technology is going to move quite a lot in the next few years, and I'm not spending thousands on something I'll be replacing every so often.

i agree the nuvi 200 widescreen does the the same job for half the price. i have a 610 but a 200 w is just as good.

Have a Tom Tom one XL, and it works very well, no complaints, you can even connect to other tom tom users.

We are planning a 4 week trip to USA next year, so where would the best place be to “get” the USA maps from for a Garmin 205 or 350 :D
