Hey guys need some advice...
Got an ancient setup compared to most of you guys lmao! But here goes...
Core2Quad 2.66ghz
Intel dq45cb board
4gb ddr2 ram 800mhz
Seagate 500gb 3.5”(OS Win 7 Pro)
2x 2tb Seagate 3.5” (storage)
MSI Gt430 OC edition 1gb 128bit ddr3
Liteon combo dvd rw/blu ray player

I’m a console guy (PS3) and I mainly use the pc as multimedia platform and love watching full HD movies most of the time (yes i know the ps3 could’ve done the same thing, but only bought it recently and have the pc setup now little over 2 years)... now the gripe... i use my 40” LCD Full HD Bravia as a monitor which works fine with everything else but recently decided to ruffle its feathers and gave it a go with some gaming.

You guessed it, gpu stops working after 10 or so minutes (keeps going for a good hour or so on low graphics settings:erm:)... I’ve been told the monitor/tv I use asks to much of the gpu and should rather get a smaller proper PC monitor which i don’t wana do cos enjoy the PC on the Bravia lol!

I’m also busy with some upgrades (as budget and wife allows:D) and got a bigger case, Thermal Take A31 Chaser (the old 1 is CM elite 310) and CM W650 power supply, later in the year i’ll get better/newer motherboard and cpu but for now the Core2Quad is still running fine for me.

Sorry for the long read lmao! But could you guys please give me some advice on what GPU to look at to run on the 40” Bravia for some gaming cos I REALLY don’t want a smaller monitor...?
Thanks!

Oh, i've got about 3.5k to 4k budget for a new GPU depending on what advice i'm hopefully getting from you guys in the know.

Most of the PC shops i go to don't really give me definative advice cos all of them normally sais *"well i haven't tried gaming with a 40" LCD yet..."*

The physical size of the screen/TV has nothing to do with the requirements of the graphics card. It is purely the resolution of the screen/TV that would influence your decision. So you can even get a 40" HD Ready TV (1366x768), that has a lower resolution than a 23" LCD screen (eg. 1920x1080 resolution)! So in this case the TV is way less demanding on the graphics card than the smaller PC monitor.

That GT430 should suffice for the TV if you're just using it to playback Full HD videos. What exactly is happening after 10 minutes or so? Perhaps you should run MSI Afterburner and increase the voltage slightly on it and see if that doesn't improve the stability.

If your TV is a Full HD one, and you'd like to play new game titles, then you'll need to get a new graphics card like an HD7850 for instance: http://www.wootware.co.za/powercolo...ci-express-3-0-x16-desktop-graphics-card.html @ ~R2200.
For a R3k+ budget, have a look at the HD7950: http://www.wootware.co.za/powercolo...-includes-crysis-3-and-bioshock-infinite.html

Spending R3500 to R4000 on your graphics card will also leave your computer in a bottleneck, since that graphics card will very likely outperform your CPU.

The GPU runs fine with normal usage and watching HD movies, The LCD is full HD...

All the games i try running on full/high video/graphics settings will run 10 or so minutes and then will screen will freeze and go dark for a minute or so and will get "program has stopped working" etc message and some times the pc wont even respond and have to restart...

That sounds like one of the following issues:
1) faulty GPU drivers
2) insufficient voltage given to GPU
3) faulty GPU memory

As i've mentioned i am busy with upgrading but doing it as budget allows, case and psu is sorted and want to do GPU next or at least now lol, then in about 3 months time looking to get nice new board and i7 cpu

So you say the card is most likely to bottle neck the quad cpu...? may i ask why (I'm by no means PC/IT guy and mainly Google everything:erm:)

Buy the GPU. I'd go with the 7950. Should be a bit future proof.
You can always upgrade the CPU & Motherboard later. There after another 4GB ram won't hurt.
Will sort out your gaming issues. The CPU will bottleneck your GPU, but you will still get decent performance.

A SSD will turbo charge your PC, but it won't sort out your gaming issues.

Just check what wattage the 7950 requires. 6+8 Pin power connector.

Your 400W PSU should suffice for that graphics card! I would recommend that you use MSI Afterburner and increase the voltage slightly (by say 0.025V = 25mV)

^^ What he said.

You absolutely have to get a 40" long graphics card, otherwise I don't think it's going to work :P

Was it giving this problem before you used the 40 inch?

This only happens when you play games, so try a later version of drivers. A 400w psu?...i don't know...I wouldn't....

And if you going to buy a graphics card today, and it's a mid level card then you should get a better psu, just to be sure.

Already bought the W650 PSU and a new case (check 1st post), doing the transplant this afternoon and hopefully getting the new GPU in the week if i dont find anything prescribed in earlier posts ,from you guys, in the shops today then i'll order online.

A big thanks for all your input guys!

Ah, sorry, didn't see that.

The new graphics cards are insanely fast. When you're playing a game, let's say, between your cpu and your ram, you can get x amount of data processed or passed through your computer.
At the same time your graphics card does the same.
I think though I should have said your pc will bottleneck your new graphics card.
In short, your pc would be a 120km/h Uno with tyres rated to do 300.

But you said you're getting an i7? Good move.
