What graphic card you using?

Yeah, but I've got an overclocked AMD-XP mobile and it is literally just running stably on my PSU at 2000mhz. The 12V rail is in the 12,5 - 12,6 range during Prime95 and thats mainly just my CPU and RAM working. I really need a new PSU. Thanks for the feedback Perdition:)
 
Fair enough, I'm running a P4 2.8 (Northwood) overclocked to 3.2 and my 12v rail sits at about 11.7v.

It's probably wise to invest in a good PSU now as you can always carry it over to a new system. I would definitely recommend quality over quantity i.e. a good quality 400W PSU is much better than a mediocre 500W PSU. I'm sure you know this but just info for the general public :)
 
Hmmmm....just had a look at the 512MB Geforce 6800 Ultra....Recommended retail price R9999!!!!!!!!! Can you imagine paying that for a graphics card? For about R5999 you can get the Asus X850XT Platinum, still very expensive but much better value for money. Oh well...i can dream...Will stick with my 9550 for a while :)
 
A 512MB card is a COMPLETE waste of money at this point in time. Most current games don't even take full advantage of 256MB cards. That R10k vid card will be worth half that in 6 months time... not a good investment!
 
Any card valued at over R2000 is a waste of money right now.

Every single game on the market I can still play with a 2 year old Ti4200 !

A few games are a tad slow, but they are still playable.

I'm no longer prepared to fork out huge bucks for small FPS rewards.
 
I paid R3000 for my 6800GT but that was pushing it for me and only after much consideration. I know it will last me until WGF 2.0 (aka DX10) cards and games hit the market which will only be in (at least) a few years time.
 
Geforce 6800 GT's and X800XL's are a bit more than R2000 but are the best value-for-money for the high-end cards and do have a massive increase in framerates from a 9800 Pro or a 5900 XT...so I'd say anything above +-R3500 is a waste of money.
 
Running 2 identical machines - both running PCIX GigaByte 6600GT's. Identical performance figures. Completely different temperature's. LOL.
Chose Nvidea after all the crap had with my ATI RADEON All In Wonder's Drivers+Software.

Heck, I upgraded back in 2000 from a TNT2 to a GeForce2 Deluxe, which cost me R2500 at the time and 2 years back, upgraded to an AsusTi4200 Deluxe which was R3000 at the time.

I've spent more on video cards over the last few years than anything else, so the manufacturers can sit and swivel - I won't get ripped again just to get the latest greatest as I've always been dissapointed when I've seen the prices plummet 12 months down the line.

What I think has happened is that video cards have finally outstripped game performance for your average games. It's only games like DoomIII that really push the boundaries, so getting a 6600 just for that is really a bit daft.

No dought the next generation of games will once again drive video card capabilities and drive the 6600/6800 prices down at the same time.

There's 3 games I'm waiting for :-

GTA: San Andreas for PC
Black & White 2
Quake 4

The first one will play 100% perfect on my Ti4200, the other 2 will run like DoomIII does now - just about good enough. Hopefully by the Time B&W2 and Q4 are released, a 6600 will be under R1000
 
Ja hopefully Quake 4 is gonna be wicked, played Q3 in the UK the first day it came out and was hooked ever since.. I hope Q4 is faster though, been playing quite a bit of CS:S and the speed aspect of Quake is definitely one of the best things. The rubbish thing is though that I started playing FPS games with a ball mouse - now with optical things are just different. Ima buy a very nice ball mouse and see if there's a difference, I remember playing with a few mates last year across a rather large WAN and I was 0wning with the ball mouse - then when I used the optical i sucked.. eish, talk about old skool :)

I'm thinking about just leaving my PC with its crap 300W (even if I can't oc my AMD-XPM to full potential) and just save up to buy a whole new PC. BTW, good tip about PSUs, learnt that with my current one :p

Anone interested in buying a AOpen 6800GT :D?

dude...i just move from a 5200 to ati 9550, i cant tell you the difference :) sooooo much better! The 9550 is very oc friendly...you can get it to 9600 Pro levels and with some extra cooling 9600XT levels :)

I can't wait for Q4 either, Q3 has recently become a major time muncher for me again :D

It takes a little while to getting used to an optical mouse, I don't find them any better or worse than a ball mouse (unless you have an MX 1000 in which case a) it's much better and b) you suck!).

I don't think I've ever played Q3 with a ball mouse but know with my optical (MS explorer, one of the earlier generation ones) I do pretty well. Recently got through the Hardcore single player game with no problems (apart from Xaero!) and give Nightmare bots a run for their money. Haven't played any humans in a long time though.
 
Currently running a single Asus 6800GT PCI-E. Wait another 9 months I'll buy another for around R1500 and run them in SLI and avoid having to shell for the next big thing. :D
 
FireFli - what screen refresh rate r you running at ? Should run at around 120 MHz ?
Just curious, most people run at 80 MHz and never realise how much they're missing out on.
And - I've had one bloke who recons running the 6800GT at 120 MHz refresh rate makes it run at about 8 degree's hotter. Methinks that must be bull. The refresh rate makes no difference on operating temparature wif my 6600GT.
 
Running at 70Hz refresh rate, I would be lying if I knew what the exact temp is but it's below 60 degrees goes up about 8 - 9 when I play games. Will run a monitor tonight and let you know exact figures.
 
Took note of the temps, when I played WoW pushed the Refresh rate to 100hz in game and the card temp went up by 8 - 9 degrees. But it always has done this so no surprise there. Can't push the refresh rate higher than 82Hz in Windows. But I took it up and there was no significant spike in temp.
