Police praised for foiling robbery

An attempt by a gang of armed robbers to pull off a brazen robbery outside a Pretoria bank ended in bloodshed when police surprised the suspects moments before they could launch their assault.

The five men, wanted in a connection with at least 12 armed robberies around the city, were foiled by police who had been on patrol in Centurion.

The shooting brings to eight the number of armed robbers caught by city police over the past 24 hours.

Police launched their assault on Tuesday moments after they spotted the suspects outside a Standard Bank opposite the Centurion Mall.

Realising that the suspects' vehicles had been used in previous robberies across Pretoria, police blocked roads surrounding the bank.

Waiting for them to make their move, police launched their counter-attack as the men drove out from the bank's parking lot.

The suspects allegedly attack their victims as they leave banks with large sums of money.

They were driving towards the corner of Hendrik Verwoerd and South streets directly opposite the bank.

Here they were allegedly going to wait to attack a customer who had just withdrawn money from the bank.

As the suspects, from Mamelodi, drove off in their white VW Golf and a white VW Polo, police stopped them.

The Lyttelton police station's task team pulled two men from the Golf, recovering an unlicensed 9mm pistol.

While police arrested the two, their colleagues tailed the three suspects in the Polo who had raced off after seeing their accomplices arrested. Unable to escape, the Polo driver was forced to stop.

Police, who ordered the suspects to surrender, opened fire on one of the men, killing him instantly, when he allegedly tried to shoot them.

The mid-morning shooting brought dozens of bystanders out of their nearby offices and passing motorists stopped to watch as forensic experts fingerprinted the suspects.

Many of the motorists were seen congratulating police on the arrests.

"This is great. This is not only what the world needs to see, but all South Africans. People need to know that crime does not pay," said Johann Burgess.

Police said the suspects were notorious for the violence they used in their crimes.

"Several of their victims have been severely assaulted and nearly killed. They will not think twice about killing someone," said a constable.

Another police officer said the suspect was shot when he pulled out a gun and threatened police.

"He and his two accomplices were told to lie on the ground. Two obeyed, but as the third bent down he suddenly turned around with a gun.

"That was when he was shot and killed," he said.

Police spokesperson Aveline Hardaker confirmed the suspects were wanted in connection with a spate of robberies.

Now they just need to find the bank employee who was passing the gang information on who drew the large sum of money, then the whole gang will be behind bars, well until the docket is "lost" when money changes hands !
 
Cool, It reminds me that the US recently reviewed the second amendment and found the original Declaration entitled all Americans to Bear arms and did not entitle them to bear arms.

I thought it entitled them to bare arms ...or arm bears ...
