One of my friends just got a 35% increase at his company  Not in ICT field and not a promotion. Just because he worked really hard this past year.
This seems to happen in companies where there are no postgrades with associated payscales. Occasionally they sort of equalise the existing staff with new appointments, then this happens.

Happened to a friend of me as well and that was the reason.

"Raise", in my opinion, is not an anual thing. An anual "increase", should match inflation. Something that does not happen.

A "raise" is a type of reward earned by an employee for exceptional performance. Something that can't happen in SA really, because if you dare reward a star, then you run the risk of being accused of discrimination, unfairness, favoritism, etc...

It's racist. That is so true. Even works the other way. Managers are so afraid to tackle certain poor performing staff members that they push the workload on the others.

We really do incentivise mediocrity massively in this country. In the end employers get what they pay for though. You cannot as an employer think of your workforce as yesterday's Chutney. Something you can discard with no care or thought and then expect stellar work.

Other: matched with inflation at minimum but has to be tied to performance, too. If they can't perform enough to get even an inflationary linked increase, they really should go!!

It is too complex to answer like that. You must compare the current salary with salary of peers and the industry and then try to balance while attempting to give at least inflation. But obviously career growth needs to be taken into account as well which can lead to an increase above the inflationary increase. You also have to consider the history of increases -- e.g. was there a deferment of increases when times were tough? You must consider what the job market is doing so your pay is in line what the market does. You need to be careful that new hires don't earn a lot more than existing employees. You might want to give the lower earners a slightly bigger increase than the top earners.

There are so many factors it is crazy.

Not a big fan of blanket increases above inflation negotiated by unions. Very often they hook the middle-income earners to the low income earners to make it seem that not giving an above inflation increase is exploiting the poor. If somebody earns between R3500 and R7000 then above inflation increase is cool, but people earning R25,000 shouldn't necessarily get the same increase. Poor performers should be disqualified from increases.

I believe a company should try for inflation as average

With some performing well above that and those not performing below or none

But this does come in if the company can afford it
It does not help the company gives full inflation rate but has to close its doors 6 months later

And it also should not be the way some companies use hard times as excuse to not pay increases even though the hard times actually lead to them getting more money

less than your worth but enough to make you coming back for more.
thats how raises and increases are doled out in SA, unless you work for the ANC.
then its based on how much stealing and looting you have managed this year.

What's a raise again..... haven't heard that word in a very very long time

Inflation minimum plus performance based percentage
