In practice, the more you stay in same company, the more they know that you are not going anywhere really. It reduces your chances of getting decent raise.
I guess companies have different policies. We usually get inflation or more, but it’s the same percentage increase for everyone across the board. So we get richer year on year, but it would be wildly inaccurate to say that everyone is creating more value each year.

By Default companies should increase their employees remuneration in line with inflation, that's just to prevent them from being worse off than the year before. You can call that a "Raise". Some people seem to confuse that with a promotion or a salary increase, that you should only get based on performance and can be variable depending on how the company is doing.

Do you work for the government?

My raise for the past 3 years has been no more than 4% per annum. But they are happy to hike up benefit charges (run inhouse) by 12% per year. Then senior bosses gets 9% increases, let alone bonuses enough to buy farms, top of the range vehicles, etc.

It honestly sucks work wise.

oh, I saved them R100 million last year, and got a 3% increase annually with a letter of thanks for all the great work. Sadly for them I have started encrypting all data and connections I work with, and once I have moved it onto our new server, which I only have access too. I will put on an encryption timer, and quit.

Ironically some companies wont hire you if you havent changed jobs every 3 years.

That reminds me of that part in Maverick where they say how he shouldve been a 2 star admiral but he is still a captain, yet recommendation, recommendation, top pilot etc.

And he replies with....that mystery still eludes me.

Companies talk all about loyalty, but in reality they dont want anyone that's loyal anymore. Especially not in a corporate space. Instead they would rather see one another stab each other in the back to get ahead.

There is no good guys in corporate anymore.

The head of one of the biggest financial houses in SA the other day complained because people has stuck around for more than 10 years which she saw as an insult. They should go somewhere else.

The down side is that same company has such critical staff in IT that if no more than 8 leaves, the entire company will collapse.

I remember something similar at another company in town. Trillion Dollar trading company. Boss gets his friend that's got no people skills to run their IT space. He gives them no increases, treats them like crap. In 3 months 163 IT staff resigned (out of 167). The whole company went from a multi-billion rand company doing trillions in trades to bankruptcy.

Jasses with this attitude I would have given you fokkol increase. Being vindictive will get you nowhere.

I usually get inflation linked and have absolutely no clue as to what others get. I have kind of reached the ceiling for a mature developer. Pay is good though for what I do. Our company must pay well in general. I had conversations with 2-3 people who have been with the company since its beginning and they said they tried to get jobs elsewhere but none of the other IT companies could match their package.

One of the IT architect let out once that he doesn't understand why he gets paid so much when the end client pays a bit less than what he earns.

At a minimum, it should be based on the average medical aid price increase IMO. That is a much more reasonable approximation of inflation than CPI. Elsewise you seriously run the risk of losing employees.
Yup. My salary went up with 6%, my medical however went up with 10. And don't even get me started on the price of bread and other basics. Blue Ribbon used to be R10. Xx now you won't find a retail packaged bread for under R15

You know that your employer would be able to sue you for doing this right? That is wilful destruction of property.

They will just pay someone the extra 10% more than they pay you to unencrypt it. plenty of hackers out there who enjoy a challenge, then they will also sue the sh#t out of you
