What is decolonised education?

Here ya go.
Walter Sisulu University is probably a good example...
searching online, I found this (posted by the official WSU account). I'd say this is locally relevant:

What else can be said of WSU?

Walter Sisulu University (WSU) is the worst performing among comprehensive universities in the country, according to the department of higher education and training.

Addressing the media in Pretoria, department of higher education director general Gwebinkundla Qonde said the university had an unusually high percentage of salary expenditure – standing at 75% of income. The national payroll norm is between 55 and 62%.

"This is a consequence of deliberate misappropriation of funds by members of management, following the merger in 2005. When we intervened in 2011, personnel costs constituted 80% of the operational income," he said.

The university was put under government administration in 2011, and its council was dissolved following an independent assessor’s report that showed that the university had been operating on a council-approved deficit for about five years. It was also unable to afford salaries – management illegally used earmarked grants provided for infrastructure improvement to pay salaries.

Qonde announced that the administrator, Professor Lourens Van Staden, is currently investigating the 20 members of senior and executive management that were fired in 2012, and there is a possibility that he might press criminal charges against them.

But, but, Africa could have a standard... Sipho has 34 cows, and he gives 7 to Mpho, his next door neighbour, how much cows does Sipho and Mpho have? (Yes, I know, I am using a very difficult Higher Educational example here, but it is plausible)

if you can get this answer correctly, then you are the PhD of Maths. (african university standard)

This plays into the hands that most protesters are BA students. You cannot decolonise Math, Science, etc.

Africa has no standard for these, so they just have to accept the foreign standard.

You're missing the point (well so was I in my earlier posts in this thread). These guys want to remove ALL western influence in SA. Ironic when they hanker after the products of western culture like cell phones, Benz's etc. Irony just doesn't feature in their vocabulary as Ntokozo Qwabe made perfectly clear.

Meh, the idea of universities comes from non-African old men. Time to let go of this tool of African oppression.

This is what he told us:

- The current curriculum dehumanises black students.
How?

“We study all these dead white men who presided over our oppression, and we are made to use their thinking as a standard and as a point of departure.”
Well, that's only natural seeing as dead white men carved the world into the shape it is today. One tries to learn about the world as it is today and the various factors that influence it today, yes?

- Our own thinking as Africans has been undermined. We must have our own education from our own continent;
Undermined or simply deemed academically inferior for the purposes of most people who want an education?

- We cannot be decolonised by white people who colonised us;

- Decolonisation advances the interests of Africans, instead of advancing Eurocentric interests.
"Decolonisation" does not exist. No one can be "decolonised".

''Eurocentrism does not serve our interests culturally, socially, economically. It does not resolve the issues of Africa.''
Yeah, because nowhere else in the world are the masses complaining that the various institutions of power are grinding the common man into the dust. :rolleyes:

- Education is not neutral, it serves particular interests.
When you interact with people, you are serving particular interests. Most likely the interests of the person you are interacting with. That's how mutually beneficial arrangements work.

Seems this guy claims he's not getting anything out of education as it currently stands. Otherwise it's serving his interests.

- Students are forced to accept certain standard works to study in certain fields - even the work of Karl Marx. Although considered worthy, the German philosopher’s work is offered repeatedly as a standard, instead of introducing new ideas by Africans;
What new ideas are these? Can anyone point them out?

- White lecturers teach students African music and the base of music studies is classical European music.
Remind me to complain next time a black lecturer wants to talk about any music that isn't rap, R&B, kwaito or reggae. :rolleyes:

- The curriculum does not accommodate creativity and expression in African languages. For example, drama students feel they are marked lower if they produce work in an African language;
This *might* be a valid point if proven true.

- Decolonised education is not the same as transformed education;

- For decolonised education to be introduced, the existing system must be overthrown and the people it is supposed to serve must define it for themselves.
Oh look, the people are being horribly oppressed by education. :rolleyes:

More intersectional rot that puts everyone into separate camps and unites us all in misery and mutual loathing for the various arbitrary differences that divide us now that everyone believes differences are something to be fought over a la "privilege + prejudice = racism."

Sorry, but simply attacking the pillars of society is not constructive behavior.

''We want to review that system and that curriculum, and that can't happen without a decolonised institution.''
And what if after the review it turns out that your idea is crap? Who's going to put the pieces back together afterwards?

Africa has no standard for these, so they just have to accept the foreign standard.

There is an argument that agricultural, mathematical, medical sciences and other sciences are stolen by the pale skinned. We may witness association (and idea) changes. There is already a claim that Chris Barnard took credit over Hamilton Naki…

You know, white civilisation stole Arab, black, civilisation.

And if these fckers were studying in the UK, on a Rhodes scholarship, they'd still be whining about how Eurocentric things were... in Europe.

True. The only problem is, not many people will get that opportunity to leave South Africa.

Problem is, there are way too many people who still thinks that South Africa will become better and that there is still hope for the country. They are all wrong and will get to a point where they will have to flee this country for their own safety, much like most farmers and white people in Zim. By then it will be too late for most.

For those who cannot leave, save up while you can. Afford, at least, your children a better life after school.

I and my family have received our New Zealand visas and just waiting to sell our home and movable assets and we gone.
My patriotism died in 2008 when thug Nr1 pulled his coup.

Thing is degree need to go through an international accreditation process in order to be recognized. To restructure or add/remove the modules is a process and a lengthy one and each time you do it the degree has to be resubmitted for accreditation.

You'll end up looking for work with your nice n shiny Afrocentric degree only to be told it's worthless.

To pull a stunt like this halfway through your studies, to destroy the current system and demand changes that could take years to implement is probably one of the most self harming things anyone could do to their education.

And the radical youngsters are falling for this nonsense? Good lord, the country truly is stuffed if this is the future.

But Westerners have visited and continue to visit hot water springs all over the world and use mud from the Dead Sea for healing purposes for centuries (whether real or perceived).

What's inherently wrong with Africans doing the same?

African curriculum because maybe someone made the world standard too hard for blacks, exactly like Verwoerd previously did with maths..

Problem is, these folk do not want to work abroad, or even locally.

All they want is a free degree, government grant, free piece of land with a tree on it and then sleep under it whole day. They do not care about real degrees or high income jobs abroad, since these positions are handed to them on a silver plate here in SA. Besides, the idea of work and rules are a disastrous notion to most of these folk today.

It's all just pure and utter racism. They throw these terms around but have no idea of the implications or application. I'd really love to ask these bright sparks how any of the above would work if you are studying law, or medicine, or engineering for example. Bloody hell, how do you Africanise mathematics or accountancy?

Come on Sammy or any of the usual defenders of this kind of thing, how does this work?

Students should start by decolonizing themselves. That starts with them NOT studying as this is a foreign concept.

They should also quit all appropriation of white culture. Including all medicine, technology and languages brought by the evil whites. Also political organization that was influenced by whites should be discarded too. This includes socialism, capitalism, communism and nationalism.

Then when all that is taken you should also not express regret... as that is a western concept too. viva...

I would also like to know what our, by those which advocate decolonised education, stance is on the Confucius Institute? China will by no means take it lightly when 'their' students revolt against their cultural vehicles. It would be damn interesting to see these institutes provide an decolonised curriculum with a touch of Chinese influence.

If they want their own degree, give it too them. Privatize universities and let them have their own universities with a syllabus they have made up all of their own entirety.

Just don't come crying when you can't get a job because no hospital or civil engineering firm is going to trust you with people's lives. Don't come crying when you want to work for a reputable law firm but they throw your C.V. in the bin because you have no inkling about the history of European law and are unable to name even forefather of Occupational Health and Safety because well, it is a "European" history.

If you even blink at the question "Who is Bernardino Ramazzini" you will be kicked out that door so hard you won't even know what hit you.

Plueeez
