What is decolonised education?

The Dept of Higher Education will NEVER grant licences to to open them up.
The riots which would ensue against these neo-colonial institutions would be massive.
It's best, if you have young kids or planning to ave a family, is to leave SA as soon as possible.
There is no future left for youngsters in SA.
Akademia ?

Great idea , this guy needs to take himself and every other like minded savage participating in the riots and start their own bantu university where they can create their own decolonised education system free of the ideas and principles of the colonists , best of all they can make it free of charge.

Is it wrong to say decolonised education is bantu education?

Bantu education was considered to be a "dumbed down" version of Western education provided in the vernacular more than anything else. These people seem to believe that there is such a thing as knowledge that is African vs. knowledge that is not African, which is obviously absurd.

Brown person adding his 2c here:

- The current curriculum dehumanises black students.

“We study all these dead white men who presided over our oppression, and we are made to use their thinking as a standard and as a point of departure.”
Oh c'mon. Just because a white person was the source of knowledge doesn't mean they are part of the group of dead whites who oppressed you. And let's be real here, apart from social/cultural differences and differences in intelligence, it's not like people from one race think differently from people from another race.

- Our own thinking as Africans has been undermined. We must have our own education from our own continent;

All knowledge builds upon existing knowledge. Just because the experts have the same skin colour as people who oppressed you doesn't change the fact that they are experts. Information is important, regardless of where it came from.

- We cannot be decolonised by white people who colonised us;

Get over your skin colour friend. Not every white person in a position of power/influence today is an "oppressive coloniser". SOME OF THEM ACTUALLY FOUGHT TO FREE YOU AND YOUR PARENTS.

- Decolonisation advances the interests of Africans, instead of advancing Eurocentric interests.

''Eurocentrism does not serve our interests culturally, socially, economically. It does not resolve the issues of Africa.''

This actually makes some sense.

- Education is not neutral, it serves particular interests.

Agreed. But do you as a 20 something year old have the knowledge/insight to actually tell what interests are being served and can actually PROVE it?

- Students are forced to accept certain standard works to study in certain fields - even the work of Karl Marx. Although considered worthy, the German philosopher’s work is offered repeatedly as a standard, instead of introducing new ideas by Africans;

Agreed. African intellectuals should be given the same level of credit as their European counterparts. However, that doesn't mean they get that credit for free. Their work must be put under the microscope just like European experts.

- White lecturers teach students African music and the base of music studies is classical European music.

Agree.

- The curriculum does not accommodate creativity and expression in African languages. For example, drama students feel they are marked lower if they produce work in an African language;

I don't care what you FEEL friend. Prove it. Gather the information and show that African language drama student's work(s) are getting lower marks than their English speaking equivalents.

- Decolonised education is not the same as transformed education;

Errrrrr, ok. What's the difference?

- For decolonised education to be introduced, the existing system must be overthrown and the people it is supposed to serve must define it for themselves.

''We want to review that system and that curriculum, and that can't happen without a decolonised institution.''

Talk about throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Again, JUST BECAUSE IT CAME FROM WHITE PEOPLE DOESN'T AUTOMATICALLY MAKE IT BAD. FFS.

At last! One properly thought out response to all the PC correct drivel so far, and one post capable of ignoring the normal backlash rubbish!

zolly

Purge them, call them racist, call them colonialist. Remove them from all from society and if need be kill them all.

This is clearly the first step in trying to create the intellectual climate for genocide. This has is eerily similar to what happened at the Univeristy of Heidelberg in 1935.

The whole structure and idea behind higher education is a WhiteColonial™ concept.

So it seems what they want is to have Bantu education but in a fancy environment, and to attain the approval of the colonizers for having it.

Good retort but I must make a comment on this line.

The idea that because something has been thought of/used/made/designed/implemented in the West or is something that serves European interests (whatever that actually means, I would love some examples) means that it cannot be used in Africa is patently absurd.

The whole point of universities & research in general is so ideas can flow around the world and be adapted (or straight out copied) in other places without having to reinvent the wheel.

In addition, who is to say European & African interests can't align.

These protestors love taking the all or nothing approach and it is completely anti-intellectual.

Racism is racism. Coming from a historically oppressed background doesn't give you the license to do what the oppressor did with impunity. Why people want to become the thing they hate the most is beyond me. Then perhaps they don't hate the principles but only the fact that they were on the wrong end? Also, saying that whites are oppressors is like saying that blacks are a violent, thieving race because I know people who have been victims of theft and violence by the hand of black people. It's called generalization and it's fine for some anecdotal observations, but sucks for basing your outlook on.

As mentioned up top here, it's called throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
Take what's good, leave what's not, where you found it including the race and culture, is meaningless.

What is decolonised education?

Cape Town - The students marching against fee increases on campuses countrywide say their campaign is also a call for decolonised, Afrocentric education.

During one of the marches this week, News24 asked UCT student Athabile Nonxuba to explain what students mean by decolonised education, and why they want it.

This is what he told us:

- The current curriculum dehumanises black students.

“We study all these dead white men who presided over our oppression, and we are made to use their thinking as a standard and as a point of departure.”

- Our own thinking as Africans has been undermined. We must have our own education from our own continent;

I have never heard such a collection of psuedo intellectual garbage in my life, or in words these people might understand... I neva herd such banch of BS in all me lyfe.

If he is feeling froggy he should try his luck. Tell a boertjie you want to kill him and see what happens. Threatening violence is easy, actually having the balls to commit a violent crime is much harder than this pretty boy in his Edgars pull over can probably handle.

How on earth do you as a university dean or chancellor engage with students on this demand? I understand we want free education, or fees have to fall, that is atleast tangible. But I keep reading about the students trying to explain 'decolonized education' and its all so abstract, philosophical and there is nothing concrete. The just of it seems to be everything european, western and white is bad, has an agenda and must be removed. Sure we could revamp historical studies, political science and music to more align it with 'African ideas', but what about the 95% of other disciplines?

I feel this is all just revenge politics aimed at whites. We are becoming the Jews in Germany in the 1930's. Vilified and demonized, and everything would be a-okay once we cleanse ourselves of any whiteness in the country.

If anyone feels history, social or literature studies are skewed, then the way to address it is to get your degree as it stands now, continue on to more advanced studies, gather your proof and use it to change what gets taught. When it comes to science and technology you're basically screwed if you want to start back from before any white man put his knowledge in, because you're basically going to have to, without any reference to any of that knowledge, work it out for yourself. You can't even attend any schooling because you'll be potentially building on ideas developed by white people.

White lecturers teach students African music and the base of music studies is classical European music.
So what's the problem? Does that mean a black lecturer cannot teach European classical music?

How on earth do you as a university dean or chancellor engage with students on this demand?.

You don't. You haul them in front of a disciplinary committee for disrupting academics and get them blacklisted from tertiary education.

If they want to become the change, then they should get their degrees, get employed by the universities, then they can decide what nonsense shovel to the next generation.

No dude this is just the natural process of the evolution of stupidity.

Apartheid gave them bantu education , they started a revolution to fight for the right to have access to quality education , now their grandchildren are not happy and fighting against the quality education for Bantu education.

Our own thinking as Africans has been undermined. We must have our own education from our own continent;

So bang goes the stuff would have learnt from Archimedes ... say hello to stuff from from Archie Gumede .....

and Isaac Newton pfffft ..... lets learn stuff from Isaac Tabata

and forget about Anders Celcius and Lord Kelvin .... in fact why worry with degrees at all.

And who is that fellow Leonardo Da Vinci ..... lets learn about Leonardo Da Caprio in Blood Diamond ....

Yeah, I can see how this is going to work out for us .....

Funny that they did not start a revolution when the British Empire gave them no education at all
