What is next after win10 for old laptops?

Upgrade your PCs and Macs to ChromeOS Flex

Think I am going to do this next week as I really don't do a lot of work on my laptop its mostly for internet news and youtube I was considering Linux but I think Chrome OS might be good fit.

I tried Win11 on it but even with all the hacks and how to videos, it wasn't a smooth install and Win11 is slow on it. Its a i3 with 12Gb ram 120Gb SSD

I have Win11 working on old hardware. The problem comes in when the software you run expects TPM2.0, and this seems to be an increasing trend, especially with games.

My sons pc kept moaning about that, some weird bug for Asrock boards.

Not necessarily a bug.
Some people are not aware that their TPM needs an update.
Some TPM chips can be updated to 2.0, most can't

But I gotta say we're heading into a really crappy era of personal computing- everything locked down, need to have X hardware to play a silly game. It's not a case of your game will run at reduced performance, its now a case of COMPUTER SAYS NO.

Brilliant scheme of Microsoft, Intel, and pals to get computer sales up again and allow the NSA and other governments to infiltrate people's lives at the same time.

There's a version of Win 11 that doesn't require TPM...has some sort of software pre-loaded. "Unofficial" version high seas.

No that's not the case.
All you need is an ISO image from Microsoft, and an imaging tool to disable the TPM checks
Installation is NOT THE ISSUE.
Running software that uses the TPM is (and certain Windows updates)

Games such as Valorant will not run on a Windows 11 system without TPM 2.0
 
I did not know all of the above messages about Win11.

I'm still on Win 10 until it stops updates - all my stuff works fine and gaming in particular is quick.

Your hand will be forced eventually as mine was with Windows 7
Things like Firefox won't update, couldn't install game updates, et-cetera.

I'll wait until next year when Support stops then upgrade... Win11 Updates and whatever bugs are remaining will be sorted out by then too.
 
Yeah I tired Ubuntu on an older Dell laptop. It ran totally fine.
DSTV streaming wouldnt work on Ubuntu though, regardless of the browser.
I then dual booted the machine with ubuntu and Win11 (currently 23h2). I did have to work around the TPM checks too.
Give Ubuntu or Mint etc a try.

I have 3 kids and a wife I can't afford DSTV it is Spotify family plan or nothing. I had YouTube Premium but dropped it after I got ads. I am not going to pay for ads. I was later told I got ads because I use a cookie blocker? I guess YouTube store some cookies to tell the player it is premium? I don't know. My wife said we can get Netflix for December. My kids asked for PlayStation Plus for December. I might just do both. But I don't want DSTV at my home, apparently they are arresting people now? Talk about putting a gun against people's heads.

I do use mint I like it a lot :thumbsup:
