Hi,

I am going to be renewing my contract soon. I would appreciate if someone can steer me in the right direction as to the best modem. There are some things I am particular about which include:

1 - Highly mobile
2 - Must make use of all the newest technical thingamajigs
3 - Must be easy one the eye

Thanks in advance guys!

The E272 and E172 are the latest HSDPA/HSUPA modems.

Some more points to add:

4 - Must support 7200/1400
5 - Must have an external antenna socket

MY answer: Huawei E272

But they're getting quite rare, so phone around till you get one.

E272 is the best modem, but it doesn't really download faster than other modems, like the dusty ol' E220.....

They both can do 3.6 or even 7.2, so for most of it the speeds should be the same.

But the E272 has an extra feature called RX Diversity which *could* help it achieve better signal levels and thus throughput, most likely in poor reception areas.

But the best bet in situations like this is to stick an external antenna on and here the E272 has an distinct edge on the E220.

I've found those cradles you get for the Huawei E272's are not all that great. I've had so much trouble to get mine to work properly. I've tried several elastic bands but they don't seem to hold it together strong enough. I've had to balance a stack of heavy books on top of the modem in the cradle to get it to work.

Using the ADPT-024 adapter seems to work much better on the E272, somehow.

Apparently there are new Huawei E180 USB sticks coming out (might actually be out now), that support 7.2 download and 5.7 upload. I'm guessing this can be used with the Poynting ADPT-025 adapter for external antenna use.

Mine works really well, after v3g swapped my incompatible E272 with his one.

Do you have to use elastic bands?

I seriously need to press the cradle and modem together really hard for it to make a connection. Maybe mines a bad cradle or modem and the connection ain't that good.

No, modem just rests in place.

Did you look at the pictures? Which type of E272 do you have?

I think you er....broke it somehow

if elastic bands didn't come with it - you shouldn't need them.

Yup, I saw the pictures. I've got the E272 that can take the external antenna.

Yes I see dimples and the cradle is sitting the correct way.

Well this is how it's been since I got the cradle.

If I just leave it resting in the cradle without elastic bands or anything, then there is no connection, but if I put pressure between the cradle and the E272, then I get a connection.

As if the little pin in the cradle is not making a solid connection or something. The cradle and modem are not damage in any way physically.

I'll see if I can get my hands on another E272 cradle.

Just to confirm, you have the two dimples on the modem and the matching ones in the cradle?

I also found that the male end of the cradle was not long enough to penetrate the E-272 female end - put it this way.....the cradle's manhood is not well endowed, it only just enters the orrifice.
Having said that...I had a robbery on my double cab at a Durban mall this past monday afternoon 9/2/2009, and my E-272, which was in a bag on the back seat was stolen. So if anyone in the Durban area gets a shifty looking guy trying to sell them an E-272....it's mine. I am not worried about the cost - I just want another E-272, but it looks like none are available. Mine was just 2 months old when it was stolen.

There are definitely E272's around. Maybe phone a few Vodashops and see what they say.

Thanks V3G, I managed to find a vodashop here in my hometown of Richards Bay that has one left. I'm taking it, although they are ripping me off at R 2000.00. I already have the matching cradle, and it really IS a good modem, so I am going to buy it tomorrow. Most of the other outlets I went to said that the E272 has been discontinued, hence the reason why I am going to grab this last one.
Have a good day, and thanks for all the help you give here on the forum.
