What is the best modem?

It seems crazy to discontinue the E272, when it is clearly a recent and good modem. It is one of few USB modems that provide an external antenna jack, so you can connect a high gain antenna...

The E272 has indeed been discontinued. Qualcomm who makes the chipset discontinued it forcing Huawei, in turn, to stop manufacturing.

We actually expected to be completely out off stock last year already but the procurement people worked miracles and found a few thousand extra units. Last time I checked there were still a number left but they'll be going quickly.

It is a great modem, got all the right features and even looks good enough for the Apple fan-boys to allow it to penetrate an orifice on their beloved Mac Books. :) We're talking to some of the manufacturers to come up with a worthy successor.

So, if you want one, phone around till you get a shop that can still supply you.

I also found that the male end of the cradle was not long enough to penetrate the E-272 female end - put it this way.....the cradle's manhood is not well endowed, it only just enters the orrifice.
Having said that...I had a robbery on my double cab at a Durban mall this past monday afternoon 9/2/2009, and my E-272, which was in a bag on the back seat was stolen. So if anyone in the Durban area gets a shifty looking guy trying to sell them an E-272....it's mine. I am not worried about the cost - I just want another E-272, but it looks like none are available. Mine was just 2 months old when it was stolen.

LOL!! My point exactly.

I'm gonna try another modem and cradle from a friend...see if it also happens on his.

Well I just purchased my new E272 this afternoon - I think I have one of the last few available. I couldn't wait for insurance to pay out, when I heard there was one last one left in my local vodashop - I snapped it up, or else I might have missed it if I had waited. I paid R 2000.00.
Anyway, I tried putting this new E272 on the matching cradle I have here. I am also having the same problem with connection between the cradle and e272 on my new unit. You can see when the E272 mounts the cradle, it barely penetrates, at a guess I would say 1mm of penetration - sometimes that is enough, othertimes I can understand why you need books on top of the E272, to encourage penetration.
Great modem, sad to see it confirmed by v3g that it's future production is terminated.

Hi,

I am going to be renewing my contract soon. I would appreciate if someone can steer me in the right direction as to the best modem. There are some things I am particular about which include:

1 - Highly mobile
2 - Must make use of all the newest technical thingamajigs
3 - Must be easy one the eye

Thanks in advance guys!
IMO don't renew, buy your new modem outright [cash] if possible, and use PPDBs instead.

PPDB's ? is that a larny acronym for pay-as-you-go ?

PPDB = PrePaid Data Bundle

Top Up contracts might also be worth looking at. I got one in December for data only. For the price of a 1GB data bundle you can get the modem thrown in as well, whereas with a straight up data contract you have to pay extra for a "free" modem.

Yep, TopUp Data contracts are worth considering since they are very closely related to PPDBs :).
