My thoughts of Christmas carols being used to sell these games (and show their content on television) is just "brilliant" marketing.
Kids these days don't need an advertisement to tell them what they want anymore, they usually hear from their friends before it even gets to them on television... however, that being said, I do want to re-iterate that you need to let your broadcaster know this is not on.
As for your other points, **** happens. I'm not sure if you've heard of the Darwin awards, but stupid people do exist... however, and I'll bet you my gran's chocolate cake (who, btw, you probably know, she lives in Robertson too), that those kids who jumped off fences thinking they're Superman or killed themselves because people were nasty to them on facebook had several underlying issues, most of which I can guarantee stems from improper parenting/policing of content and making sure when they do set their feet outside the house that they
understand what's going on out there.
Separating fantasy from fiction is the most important thing you can teach your child other than respect for others.
Your 4 month old grandson can have all the pornographic violent blood drenching explicit games he likes... as long as you adhere to the age restriction of the game and refuse to buy it for him because you're not sure how it will affect him
OR make sure he understands full well what fantasy (Santa Clause/Tooth Fairy) and reality is, and that whatever happens in a movie doesn't happen in real life etc.
I've grown up playing games (I'm almost 30 now) and watching movies with age restriction on them.... one big difference though... my parents were WITH me during and usually made me shield my eyes (I used to peek) when the naughty bits came on.
I enjoyed a lot of horror films (I still do) except for Freddy.... and I.T (that ****ing clown gives me the heebie geebies).
Freddy just freaked me out because I love dreaming. I'm the type of person who can control his dream once I realize it's a dream (which is often) or enjoys a nightmare because I know it's not real and I'll wake up again. With Freddy I wasn't going to wake up
The point is, the
best thing you could do for your grandson is to make sure that your son (or your daughter, whichever one got married and spawned) understands that you need to teach children this basic thing. Separating fantasy from reality.
Not in a way where you spoil their fun in playing pretend.... but they'll get to an age where you'll know when it's the right time to talk to them about these things. And waiting till they're in their teens IMO is too late. Especially with sex being such a big thing even in primary schools (shocks me to my core, and sending your child to a private school is like going "Here, go to a whore house and don't try to use any of their drugs")
If the mom/dad thinks it's okay to leave a child unsupervised playing games/watching TV they're breeding, not just another idiot, but possibly a suicide/kill maniac as well
HOWEVER I would like to add that those kids are usually brought to those harsh decisions when they're taunted/mocked to no end from other people...
I turned out semi-fine even though I was mocked since I could remember. I'll go home and play my atari where I shoot tanks and other people or bomb stuff.... I wouldn't mind. Or I'll play Mortal Kombat in the arcade, not really for the blood but trying to figure out combo and "death" moves...
Never really tried any of those on my "enemies".....
Those kids who shot other kids or brought a ****ing samurai sword to school were
unsupervised brats who had access to **** they weren't suppose to have in the first place unable to tell fantasy from fiction.
It's not their fault and I don't blame them for not feeling guilty about their actions, because I feel the fault lies squarely with the parents. Whenever I see a mom cry about how her child turned out to be this "killer" and how she doesn't know what went wrong I laugh and go "BULL****, YOU KNOW WHAT WENT WRONG, YOU JUST DON'T WANT TO ADMIT ITS YOU FAULT!"
