On Friday night we went to a restaurant in PE for dinner. There were 4 of us and it wasn't a small bill. We asked for "doggy bags" for the leftover food, paid, and went on our way. On looking at the bill later that evening, I noticed that they charged us for the take away containers for the "doggy bags" - R3 a container. I am by no means "tight" but I think that this is such a cheek. I have never ever been charged for take away containers, and, it is not the R3 per container but the principle in my opinion.
I know restaurants also pay for these and it counts as overheads, but surely when you have paying customers, and a bill as much as ours was, surely it is a cheek to charge for these? This is also besides the fact that they also charged for wrong items, etc, which somewhat inflated the bill. I normally scrutinize bills but I didn't that evening.
What is your opinion?

Never been charged for takeaway containers... and would object too.

Never been charged for the containers. Finding the wrong items on the bill though is a regular thing, especially when it's a big bill.

I would so not pay for take away containers. That should not be included as separate items...

Is that place on Stanley St?

If so, one of the manageresses there went onto tripadvisor and slagged off all the adjoining restaurants with false reviews. Was spotted and there was a bit of a backlash...

I'm thinking of posting to their Facebook page and I was going to take a pic of the bill but, stupid me, threw it away!

How much was your bill? excluding tip?

The canteen at work follows a similar practice, if you sit down and eat off a plate that is fine, if you want a takeaway you pay an extra 2 ront or so for the container. Surely washing a plate and knife and fork and the price of a container are roughly equal?

I have never heard of a place charging you for take away containers. Yes it costs the restaurant money to provide them, but charging for them is much worse. It isn't worth it - R12 extra?
