Hey All,

Lately everyone has been getting really hot under the collar and it is all due to one issue - our disagreements over the state of our country and the way it is being run, so...

If you were in a position to actually make a differene for the better, what would you do? This shouldnt be a place to post your grievances or prejudices, but rather potential solutions and lets debate their potential effectiveness.

Some of the issues:

  • Electricity supply
  • Water supply and pollution
  • Telecoms infrastructure
  • Financial instability and our financial future
  • Racial divisions (lets be careful with this one now please - was in two minds about posting this one but it is relevant)
  • Crime
  • Education
  • Service delivery
  • Accountability of our politicians
  • Corruption
  • Political Parties
  • Disparity between social classes
  • Affirmative Action and BEE

Fire everyone in the ANC. Every last one.
Get new people in who care and will accept accountability.

The only time it is too late is when there is nobody alive capable of making a difference. There is always somebody who wishes something could be done. One voice alone may not be heard, but several joining together could make an improvement.

Nope.
As long as we have people in charge too lazy to do their jobs, so long will this continue.

Well you kinda miss the point here a bit - IF you could do something realistic, what would it be? Honestly, would firing everyone in the ANC be your only answer? My question is... Then what? What initiatives do you put in place to avoid the mistakes of the previous comrades or to rectify their mistakes?

thank goodness someone posed this type of thread,

my solutions

1. impose marshal law for 5 days with a 7pm curfew. this will bring it back crime back to a neutral state.

2. large visibility of police / army in hot spots such a joburg CBD during the day. when cerfew is not in effect. only for about 10 days.

3. increase public spending dramatically, use up that surplus, to upgrade infrastructure, make a deal with unions, where by all workers receive a large bonus when goals are met.

4. Make the county attractive to investors by giving large tax breaks,

5. have a 24 hour circuit court, and have new regulations in place for petty crime, prehaps a sliding scale of punishment.

6. use these convicts to build houses, make bricks ect.

7. use loacl community labour to build and maintain infrastructure. using same bonus system as applied above.

This is a very interesting thread.

1. Get a handle on what surplus funds are lying around at all levels of government, and get them in one place.
2. Suspend all race-based employment quotas in govt.
3. If possible, double the police force and attempt to improve police training.
4. Not sure of the state of the military, but recall all troops from foreign land and put them on the streets under police command.
5. Get moving at buying electricity from industry.
6. Get the military to assist in carrying coal to Newcastle or power stations if necessary. Up the price of hauling coal and encourage others to join in ( ie: do not limit to BEE firms ).
7. Form an Infrastucture Control body to rapidly investigate, prioritise and execute lifeboat plans for electricity, water, roads etc.

I'll think of more!

Firing the ANC is hardy practical!

make a deal with unions, where by all workers receive a large bonus when goals are met.

good idea, they have this in the states, but its the construction companies that build most of the buidlings/infra.The Gov should offer bonuses to the companies and the companies to the workers.

the trouble with those solutions:

1. impose marshal law for 5 days with a 7pm curfew. this will bring it back crime back to a neutral state.

I lived and operated during the 'states of emergency' in the past. Its not pleasant. It also hands far too much power to the police and army dorks roaming around. You know the kind of ignorant types who are police and army generally - do you want to hand them the power to have you arrested and jailed/detained without legal recourse? Who watches over them?

2. large visibility of police / army in hot spots such a joburg CBD during the day. when cerfew is not in effect. only for about 10 days.

The criminals would just move to another spot for the duration. Like banks and businesses beefed up security to the point where criminals 'had' to focus on soft targets like civilian houses.

3. increase public spending dramatically, use up that surplus, to upgrade infrastructure, make a deal with unions, where by all workers receive a large bonus when goals are met.

Agreed. But the State clearly isn't interested in doing this - they've had 14 years and it hasnt been done.

4. Make the county attractive to investors by giving large tax breaks,

So that the company staff can get attacked, robbed, raped and murdered when not working?

5. have a 24 hour circuit court, and have new regulations in place for petty crime, prehaps a sliding scale of punishment.

You're talking undemocratic military tribunals almost. Do you want to hand over the power to convict and sentence someone without adequate legal representation, to some of the people currently in Government? Could you trust them to make a good decision?

6. use these convicts to build houses, make bricks ect.

This creates a 'prison industrial complex' and starts making it 'profitable' for the State to actually HAVE prisoners - a dangerous thing for a democracy. It exists in the US already, and its not a positive thing for a society.

7. use loacl community labour to build and maintain infrastructure. using same bonus system as applied above.

And who watches the watchmen? Who watches over who pays the man who pays the man who does the work? Its potentially breeding more bribery and corruption.

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? A question posed by Plato in the Republic and popularized by the Roman poet Juvenal ... I don't think any government has answered this question successfully.

Im suprised that this thread hasnt had many replies.

Guess its easier to criticize than to offer reasonable solutions..

It all comes down again to the fact that the people who will need to carry out the plans are corrupt and inefficient. So it is really pointless.
I can admire the person who wants to start a thread like this, and who wants input and so on - but it hurts to bang your head on the wall all the time.

Infrared CCTV cameras on all roads - paid for from rates and taxes is an example. Monitor these 24/7 and watch out for "wall jumpers".
Except - the taxes are wasted, the contract for said cameras will go to some BEE company that will fail to deliver, and the likes of Yengeni will get a new car for their trouble.
An "Alec Erwin" will make a speech a year later dismissing the crime problem, and tell us to sleep with one eye open while it is "handled".

OK, so what would you do (if you were in a position to do something) to curb this corruption?

Ok I'll try my best to tackle each of these issues individually.
Electricity supply
Tell the hippies to go smoke a joint and leave the technical details to people who are qualified. Nuclear power stations will not give their kids three fingers and six eyes, that's the marijuana speaking.

Introduce competition so that we have ample power stations available. Fire Alec Duhwin.

[edit] After reading imajin's post below, I agree that funding alternate sources of energy would be a very good idea.
Water supply and pollution
Introduce more sanitary facilities to areas that pose health risks. Make it known to people that taking a crap in a river will not be accepted, and anyone caught will face arrest.

Introduce performance based packages to people in charge of water purification.
Telecoms infrastructure
Unbundle the local loop ASAP. ICASA should be court-ordered to uphold their mandate. Fire Ivy. Government should not be allowed to be majority shareholder in a private organisation.

Financial instability and our financial future
I don't think there's anything wrong with our economy. Rand/$ is not an accurate indicator of the state of an economy.

Racial divisions (lets be careful with this one now please - was in two minds about posting this one but it is relevant)
Nothing we can do, people are set in their ways. All we can hope for is that they don't force their views onto their children.

Increase the police workforce. New recruits should meet minimum educational requirements, in addition to being properly trained and further educated after being accepted. Most importantly, give our guys an incentive to do their job properly (and without corruption) - pay them a decent salary with which they can support their families. They are, after all, putting their lives at risk in order to protect ours.

Education
As with the police force, give people the proper motivation in order to train as teachers. I know of many people who would have loved to have been a teacher (it's one of the most emotionally rewarding careers), but have shied away from it due to the lousy salary.

Service delivery
Accountability of our politicians
Corruption
All these relate to the same thing. Accountability can be introduced via jobs that are performance-based. You don't achieve a certain target within a certain period, you don't get paid. Fail three times and you get fired.

With respect to corruption, harsher penalties should be imposed on politicians than on civilians. For example, a corruption charge should be an automatic life-imprisonment sentence, no matter how small. Or something equally harsh that would deter corrupt politicians. Another example could be a 20 year community service sentence, at minimum wage.

Political Parties
They should stop all the bitching, unite and share views on the way forward. I'm tired of the ANC's crap, but I'm also tired of the DA's constant moaning. The DA should accept the fact that they will never win much power for as long as they don't have a black leader (the majority are simply too paranoid to reason otherwise). The best way forward is a merge between the DA, IFP and UDM, and elect either Holomisa or Buthelezi as the head. The DA would still have plenty of clout within the party so there's nothing to fear about who leads it (after all it's mainly about showing the public that you can have a racially integrated party that works)

Disparity between social classes
Capitalism at work. If people want to uplift their social standing, they need to work for it. There's only so much that can be handed on a silver platter.

Affirmative Action and BEE
The concept is a good one, the implementation has been bad. Anyway recently, I seem to have noticed that things have eased a bit wrt AA/EE. A search on careerjunction yields maybe only 10% results that are AA/EE only.

  • electricity supply: heavily subsidise all forms of alternative natural energy, ie wind, solar and water.
  • water supply: shouldnt be a problem when the power supplies have stabilised once more.
  • telecoms infrastructure: allow anyone to build their own networks, quickly unbundle the local loop, and make all undersea cables landing in SA essential assets.
  • crime: bring in the army, but NOT martial law. they just need to be more visible everywhere, as i doubt criminals would want to take on The Army. heck, i'll even join the army for a few months of fighting scum :)
  • education: increase the budget of the education department, double our teachers' salaries, build a LOT more schools.
  • accountability of our politicians and corruption: recruit external auditors who can very easily trace all acts of corruption and people not doing their jobs. make corruption a very serious crime which carries a minimum 10 year sentence. create an avenue where a group of selected individuals will vote whether or not to fire a minister/mayor etc based on their performance.
  • political parties: get rid of floor crossing. make people aware of what they're actually voting for
the ones i have omitted, :shrug shoulders:

a Solution for the country or a personal solution?? Personal solution is get out of here as fast as possible.

[*]Electricity supply: Fire the whole eskom board and government and appoint competent people. Also take a look at how China can build a new electricty generating plant in a year.

[*]Water supply and pollution

[*]Telecoms infrastructure: Privatise the sector.

[*]Financial instability and our financial future: Get proper people in charge of the country and get the rest of the things working and this will take care of itself.

[*]Crime: Proper sentences and put non corrupt people in charging of policy and actually catch the criminals.

[*]Education: Get properly trained teachers in place and make sure each school has the proper facilities.

[*]Disparity between social classes: Don't care their are always disparity between the rich and the poor. Except in oil rich countries were the sheikh can afford they give everyone a house.

[*]Affirmative Action and BEE: Scrap it entirely or at the minimum say guys who were younger than 21 in 1994 are exempt from this BS since they weren't a part of the apartheid system.

What about the effects of Apartheid that created a social imbalance which lasted for more than 50 years? Is 14 years going to address that?

Note that I'm not advocating one way or another, but some issues are not that simple to address. I would say that we need at the very least 40 years. African Americans are still feeling the effects of poverty more than 100 years after slavery was abolished. We should use the US as a case study in order to try and improve our situation quicker than they could.
