Dune: Part 1 and 2 are well worth seeing in cinema.

Having watched Furiosa and Fury Road, those would have been worthwhile to. Problem is simple, its too expensive to take the chance on a sh** movie.

Only go to cinema for those I REALLY REALLY want to watch on big screen and sound, and I've been burnt a few times by cinema's having crappy sound or a broken speaker somewhere causing aural issues for me.
Taking my son to watch Deadpool & Wolverine today. First time I've been in a movie theatre since Deadpool 2.

I went to blockbusters many years ago, looked for 2 movies that was released a while ago, they said it is still coming, might be in the next few months, so I went home and downloaded both of them and watched them, that is what killed blockbusters, availability.

With Movies and series being so easy to get hold of by legal or less than legal means, there is no reason to drive somewhere, watch the movie and have to take it back, its an archaic concept in this day and age. Like my parents used to tell about them making a whole night of going to the drive in and watching the movie with other people in their cars, the concept of going to the cinema or renting a dvd is foreign to todays generations
Not that Blockbusters! ;)

A movie needs to be epic in scope and feel to justify the cost of going out to see it. Movies that recently ticked that box for me are Dune Part 1 and 2 and Top Gun Maverick. Avatar 2 was pretty epic too even if the story was boring as hell.

As much as I am looking forward to the latest Deadpool, I will most likely watch it at home. Only upcoming movie I might see in the theatre is Gladiator 2.

Netflix
They killed the real Blockbusters and blockbuster movies.
Everything is mass produced as fast as possible to make more profit.

I think it's a combination of modern movies being not on the scale of the previous blockbusters and modern home cinema and streaming services making watching films so much more enjoyable and convenient than they were in the past.

The extreme cost of visiting the cinema these days isn't helping.

I think cinemas will go the way of the newspaper as time marches on now.

I do not blame @R4ziel

He did answer the title.
Actualy he didn't.

If you would inspect the evidence closer:

A. You will notice use of the word "the". Thus referring, not to the corporate entity but to an adjective describing movies that are "epic" or "blockbusters"

B. Notice the term Blockbusters with a plural S, referring to the movies. The name of the corporate video store that dominated 80's video was Blockbuster - notice the missing S.

I shall now have my 3rd coffee

[EDIT: fixed for Redviking. Also, its best read assuming i'm speaking like Captain Holt from the 99. ] :p

I think repetition killed good movies.

Best I can explain it is the Pokemon franchise.

I remember early 2000s playing Pokemon. Wow I can save and take my game with me.
I can collect them all and not start from scratch. I can connect to friends and trade via a simple cable.

Now, a few releases after, the same sheeet. It gets old.

So, i'm sure everyone here remembers the days of queuing for a new Star Wars, rushing to get IMAX tickets for Avengers, laughing at the great humor in between action in 007, eating 2KG of popcorn through 4 hours of Hobbits, wishing we had the cars in FF etc etc.

These days i feel we just don't have that feeling of "man i can't wait for X date to see Y movie! Especially in IMAX/Big-Screen"

PS - not saying whether or not one wants to see a movie on the big-screen vs TV at home, i'm saying the excitement we had with such good movies coming seems to be lost..

What in your opinion has caused this?

Not very surprising, the only people who still go to cinemas are couples so they can play piano in the dark, family's with kids and hardcore movie fans like myself who appreciate IMAX, with that being said lets break it down:
  • Expensive movie tickets/snacks.
  • Crowded cinemas/loud people that won't stfu because they think everybody cares about their opinion.
  • Widespread adoption of internet connectivity coupled with that friend who can plug you with apps/websites that stream it for free.
  • There's so much k@k movies being released its not worth watching for free.
  • Queues are dumb af and 15 minutes of ads meaning by the time I get into the theatre and start watching my popcorns cold.
  • Convenience - Inability to pause the movie because I need to go and pee/answer a phone call etc.
Do I need to elaborate further?

Let's see.
Family of 4 (I repeated my first mistake so now I have two), 2D tickets (3d more expensive) at a reasonable time. R480
They do not have popcorn prices on their site so I'll go with this link. R420
So R900.
