I used to run suSe with which i was very happy. My pc then got fried so I've been out of the linux community for around 3 years. I'm hearing a lot of good things about Ubuntu.

Which do you use and why?

I use OpenSuse 10.2. I was previously using Ubuntu, but I found Suse to be a more complete desktop operating system. Installing the SMART package manager also gives you functionality similar to apt-get in Ubuntu.

I have no idea what apt-get is but I've find out soon ;)

I dunno if you've tried running cedega at all, but I used to run that for all my games and it worked brilliantly! I got better performance for Doom3 through Linux than I did through Windows. Thanks for the input!

I've used various flavours over the years (mainly as servers) - I quite like Ubuntu these days.

I have always liked Mandrake/Mandriva for the desktop. It's a bigger distribution ( 3-4 CDs I think ) than Ubuntu, so a normal install gives you a lot more without having to search for and download apps. Ubuntu to me is quite minimalist. Mandriva is easy to configure, easy to install, well-balanced app set, can choose KDE ( I am not a Gnome lover ). I recently test-installed Kubuntu, Suse and Fedora on virtual machines, just to see if I was missing out, and all gave some sort of hassle, so I'll stick with Mandriva. Note that this is for a desktop not a server, where the requirements might differ.

For the record: I use Ubuntu, FC and Slack. But I refuse to use it on a desktop - it just won't do. Vista and OS-X kicks linux's ass.

P.S. Linux sucks ass.

It all depends on what you use your desktop for. For gaming, it's definitely Windows FTW (I've never used OS-X so I won't comment on that), for other things, maybe not.

A few of my posts and a few others.
The sentiment you wished to express (numerous times in fact) still lives on as a post script in one of your posts.

I think the thread was hijacked, so bwana deleted some posts to get it on topic again.
glad to see it worked.

Shame, seems like linux freaks can't handle their precious OS being manhandled. Linux as a desktop is rubbish - as a server it's pretty cool - but also not so much anymore.
