Well I dont think the problem is that they earn a lot, I think it has more to do with these people earning so much and then asking for government to bail them out when they about to go under. Which then makes it our problem as they use our taxes to do so.

Perfectly fine. You should try running such large companies. Be it public or private. If you start paying your public companies less, then the calibre of individuals that you attract to apply for these jobs won't be as good. If CEO's are getting this salary, your company needs to match it in order to get a good CEO. Pretty simple.

All things considered, those salaries are not that high. The performance bonuses and restraint of trade agreements, push it up to a level which seems abnormal.

A good gig if you can get it. I don't begrudge them. I like the fact that substantial portions of their packages are performance bonuses
If you look at the type of money their respective companies make, this seems fairly low actually.
All the best to them, and i do agree, the restraints cause the figures to go out of kilter and in fairness, their basic salaries are that of a CA so it is all performance. The reality is that these companies are performing.

Let me start by saying that I am a great fan of the free market system but nobody really believes that it is appropriate in all situations. If you believed that 'free market' or 'willing buyer, willing seller' is really fair and that these executives are justified to demand their astronomical earnings, why am I not allowed to auction my organs to the highest bidder? The idea that the life of a rich person is more valuable than the life of a poor person and therefore rich people deserve better access to life saving opportunities is abhorrent to civilised people. Just because a person can pay me $1million for my cornea or kidney doesn’t mean they are more deserving than another person. And yet we, the shareholders and tax payers, are convinced that executives and government officials should be obscenely remunerated to afford exactly these injustices.
The greatest social evil comes when these talented citizens who benefit richly from society but do not contribute those talents back to the society that endorsed their extremist remuneration. How many of the above posts endorse the salaries by ‘These guys deserve what they earn because …’? In return these talented members of society shirk their responsibilities to the communities that support them by sending their children to private school, going to private hospitals, using private security companies and relaxing in private members only golf clubs. This is the ‘new apartheid’, if you can afford the price you get a place in the sun otherwise bad luck.
These talented ultra-rich people are not invested in public schooling, public medical care, public security or public recreation. They have essentially unplugged from their communities and no longer care about the schooling system, the medical system, the police or public access to beaches, mountains or parks. They have thrown the rest of the citizens under the bus to fend for themselves.
It seems that the shareholders and taxpayers who fund these salaries feel that you get better performance if you pay more. There are too many examples that show that paying huge sums is no guarantee of success. Why do we allow these talented people to demand disproportionate remuneration? Why do we feel that they deserve such outrageously privileged lifestyles? What are their qualities and how valuable are they really? Are they more valuable than honesty, dedication, loyalty, perseverance, hard work that all good employees exhibit?
Their most cherished quality is their Teflon coating, just watch them earn their zealous wages when they justify why the catastrophe that they have just overseen is not their fault. They nurture ‘plausible deniability’ because it allows them to get away with daylight robbery.
This whole mindset is getting away from us, government ministers feel they deserve to spend millions on cars and houses and life-styles while their voters are starving in unemployment. Isn’t this just the most stunning example of the ‘Executive Mindset’.

Except for the 40% tax they pay on these salaries which means that each one of them is invested 20 times more in society than the rest of us.

You bring up a pertinent point, being personally invested in a cause is more than throwing money at the problem. When you sit on the governing body as a parent of a learner at that school you tend to invest your talents and connections to create solutions.
Secondly, the earnings of executives of publicly listed companies and elected civil servants are a matter of public record, much to their annoyance I'm sure. Knowing how much they earn we have a fairly accurate idea of what they should be paying in tax but for some strange reason those tax amounts are not publicly available. Studies have been done by researchers at the various tax agencies around the world and have resulted in a cry for the figures to be released because there is often such a disparity between what they should pay and what they actually pay.
When you earn more than R1million a month and most of that is supposed to be taxed at 40% these people tend to be extraordinarily motivated to minimise that tax liability. There are bright, well paid tax consultants that devise ingenious schemes to avoid paying tax. The executives won’t tell us because they are happy to keep the money and SARS won’t tell us because then we can measure how efficient they really are. Anyway it is much easier going after a little guy who doesn’t have a tax expert and feisty lawyer. The little guys just poop themselves and pay up when SARS calls.
