What MultiChoice is doing about declining DStv Premium subscriber numbers

The service may be cheaper when compared to other countries but you can't do a direct comparison.

As stated above it's 68 pounds (roughly R1250) for the equivalent in UK.
Here in Aus, foxtel all in would cost about $120 (roughly R1200).

Average salary according to StatsSA (yes, yes I know) in Feb 2018 was R238,296
Average salary in Aus is $81,947 per annum (2016 and from what I heard on radio is still quite similar).

That is almost R500 000 difference in average salary between Aus and SA. If we are working on direct comparisons then monochoice premium should be about R250 a month.
I don't think tv, satellite, camera, studio and broadcast equipment makers charge poorer people less for their products. Have you ever tried to get a lower "third world price" on a Canon camera, or a laptop, or a smartphone, or a Toyota?

Do you think DStv get a special "we're a poorer country" discount on the stuff they have to buy from hardware, software, satellite time, and content providers? How then can you expect them to charge you special "I earn less money" prices?

Just curious how you imagine pricing works.

My own view is DStv Premium is pretty fair at the price, all things considered. $70-$75 a month ain't bad for what we get.

DSTV Premium is expensive for what they are offering 1000 for rubbish, I downgraded recently, and as soon as I can get reliable broadband service am off DSTV totally.

Pound costs:
Sky TV All channels excluding sport - 20 (has a 3 record plus 1 view) http://www.sky.com/shop/tv/
Add All Sports - 20 http://www.sky.com/shop/tv/sports
Add BT Sports for the other EPL games you don't have - 28 (plus 20 activation) https://www.productsandservices.bt.com/sport/sky/

That's 68 pounds. I don't know if the basic Sky TV is better than the general DSTV. This whole Sky package comes in at R1,230.

The claim is not outrageous when you look at DSTV Premium.

Clearly the issue here is that the traditional form of TV watching is expensive.

edit - i'll take bryn's point that one is 1080p.

Sky Q the basic one may be 1080i

Strange that countries like India you can get most EPL games for the equivalent of around R200 in India

Mr CEO still doesn't realize we didn't kick DSTV curbside just for price, tho it was a factor, but also for the convenience of on-demand streaming.

Viewing what I wanna watch when I wanna watch, no waiting, scheduling or repeats. Not even 1000 of your channels can give me that convenience.

Totally changed the way I consume television & I'm not even a goddamn pony-tailed millennium..

Mawela warned that DStv as a satellite pay-TV service was operating on borrowed time, and heavy-handed regulations will kill its business.
No there is nothing wrong with ICSA regulations, you pretty much had free reign as far back as the 90's.Innovation and no repeats is what is killing your business...stop moaning and actually do some thing constructive.Like..... I don't know...innovate ;)

What Multichoice is going to do is bribe the government to make the market unpalatable for products like Netflix.

MultiChoice isn’t filming 95% of the content it’s broadcasting thus it’s input costs for the majority of channels would surprise you especially since plenty of channels are bundled together at extremely discounted rates or offered as revenue share of advertising etc.

DSTV has only itself to blame. Carry onn with your repeats, movie sequels on most of the movie channels for international movies that are a blast from the past, more adverts and even their own informercials than free tv , having box office and showmax ...and now blame it on Netflix ?

Fair enough, but then they must expect ways less subscriptions.

In USD most South Africans are quite poor, myself included. And getting poorer all the time. That is not going to change.

However, no matter, quite happy with World Cup on SABC1.

And I can watch most other things when I feel like it.

I have Netflix, Amazon Prime, NowTV (Sky), and still pay only half of what DSTV costs. And I can't watch all the content, not enough time in the day. So can't even justify Showmax, although I have used it once or twice.

Sky is far better than DSTV. You get to customise what you want to in terms of packages. The picture quality is far better as they broadcast in 1080p on HD channels. The SkyQ box has a far better interface. DSTV are losing subscribers because of the lack of willingness to change.

MultuChoice will soon be adding my name to the list ex premium subscribers. I only keep it around for some sports, and my geriatric mother. I won't be defecting to Netflix either, I can't be bothered with watching movies or series.

What exactly do you want them to broadcast? New content everyday? Movies from the future?

I don't think I could ever go back to watching the shows someone else wants me to watch at the time they want me to watch it.
