I'm in Hennopspark, Centurion and I've seen my 4Mb unshaped ADSL deteriorate permanently to sub 512Kb rates over the last 2 months (judged by speedtest.net and personal usage experience). That after it worked well for a year. Between myself, my ISP and Telkom we've ruled out everything (computer, modem, isp, line, dslam port) apart from the exchange itself. Its here where things gets murky. Apparently it needs to be handed over to the 'transmission guys' now that will do what ? Send the Eubola virus over the lines to kill of some users so the congestion clears. My question is what are my options from here ? I might as well reduce my package to 384Kb as I know the exchange can handle that and at least pay less as I'm lining Telkom's pockets with a 4Mb tariff for a 384Kb service at the moment and only I care. But I'm not interested in 384Kb. I can try 3G but that supposedly sucks even more. I can move to an area where there is no congestion yet and sit around and wait until the same happens and so start a nomadic lifestyle forever moving to greener pastures where internet speed is delivered as sold but that will suck. Please offer me some insights as this is frustrating me to no end and I'm afraid I've reached the limit of my expertise and need the mybroadband cavalry.
Come to think of it: I've been screwed in this way before ... by another parastatal ... yes, them aviators ... SAA <spit>. Was on a flight to London one night and got to the airport to learn the flight was oversold. Only difference is, there I could not sit on someone's lap. With ADSL that is exactly what's happening. The more the merrier and everyone sits on everyone's lap and Telkom gets away with it because there is no stringent rules as with flying. Man I've come to hate that word ... Telkom ... Shmellkom

I feel your pain.

My line has been a joy in a way for 2 years now. And now all of a sudden a taxi load of people have been dumped onto one exchange. I can barely browse or receive emails at night. I have to wait till after 12 at night to get some things done. And thats not even bringing gaming into the picture.

I'm planning on moving from JHB to a smaller town (Heidelberg). They have all the DSL that we have here, except I doubt they have the amount of customers there that we have here. So I'm hoping to "dodge" the DSL rush.

Its ridiculous that our country allows this kind of service. In other places around the world a company would face numerous consequences. But no, we have to do things differently... And the funny thing is that when you log a fault online and u tick the "Too many users on the internet" box, it pops up a note saying, "ADSL is a best effort service". If that's Hellkoms best effort, then **** me, I NEVER wanna see anything below their "best".

According to http://www.broadbandstats.co.za/search/phone/ I am indeed on TEDO03. How long have you been trying to get it resolved with them ? If you believe you've exhausted all avenues then I'm going to get my company to downgrade my line to 384kb and save the money.

I started noticing it by the 15th of December 2011 just after they upgraded the exchange to 10mbps and its been getting worse and worse since.

Already phoned Dhevan. He laughed and said that he was not working on TED for 10 years so the Telkom mini-site is miserably out of date where those details come from.

was he able to say who does ?

Ok, good news. I phoned Dhevan again. He was very helpful and totally defied the laws of Telkom gravity and has now given me the opportunity to send him my sad story in a mail and he will personally see to it that the right people jump on it. So, there might be light at the end of the tunnel yet but i guess it will be 1-2 weeks walking to get there. Will update this forum when something interesting transpires.

1-2 weeks, for a congested exchange..... yea right... sorry bud dont mean to burst your little glint of hope but to get telkom to sort out a congested exchange means they gotta fork out money to improve it.... Telkom unfortunately does not like to spend money on their network easily, even if it means it will resolve so many issues. you will be very lucky if you have it fixed within a month. but my guess would be around the 6months - 1 year. also at the moment Telkom is in a boatload of trouble with cash and the competition tribunal so i wouldnt expect them to spend any cash until that is sorted out.

I will hold back on the pessimism for now. Just doesn't make sense to me why they will fork out money to upgrade the exchange, not achieve the goal of faster access in doing so for some as of yet unknown reason and then leave it there. If that was the mindset then they would not have upgraded in the first place I guess. But I'll hope that time will not deteriorate me to the 6months+ hoping league.

I also sent another mail to there escalation center , hope that puts more pressure on them

is it just me or has the TEDO03 exchange breached the 1500ms latency limit, lol satellite is faster

Just as nerf, I am also on that exchange and I have the same problems. Its been like this since mid December. Four 'resolved' tasks later and its only getting worse. I've mailed the escalation guys, went to the telkom office and even the exchange itself - no one has helped me. I'm also on 500-1500ms local since mid last week. I've just moved my line to Afrihost to see if they can get telkom to do anything.

If you dont mind, please pm me your phone number so that I can add the other people with this problem to any future communication I have with telkom.

I am also having the same problem. I am also on the TEDO03 exchange. Mine started on Saturday after the rain.

good stuff! never give up hope xD...

hopefully if theres a huge list of users battling it might get them to change their minds and do something a bit quicker than usual.

do you guys think it worth to setup an online petition ?
