What now if your'e exchange is congested ?

Surely it constitutes fraud if Telkom isn't able to deliver the minimum (1Mbps for a 4Mbps line) as per our contract with them?

I'm also tired of screaming and then begin ignored by their helpdesk afterwards 'cos I'm paying for something I'm not getting, what else could I do? Would it be possible to take them to Consumer Protection or lodge a complaint at (shudder) Icasa in the hope that something will be done?

Anyone done something like this before? Pls advise those of us still sitting with this problem.

do you guys think it worth to setup an online petition ?

Let's hold back on that. Telkom sent another technician with fancier equipment but that simply confirmed what i already knew: The problem is not with the line or modem but in the exchange. He mumbled something about them upgrading only one part but not the other but i couldn't get what he was trying to say. The next step is for him to submit his results to the next link in the chain. I think we give it two weeks and see what comes from it.

In my opinion, the next step after that should be that me and you and whomever reads this forum on TEDO03 do some brainstorming on how to get everyone on TEDO03 not reading this forum but suffering the same problem to simultaneously downgrade their lines to 384kb in a coordinated fashion and when doing so, use a prior communicated catch frase when contacting the call center. I'd say if the phrase is right and more than 10 people buys in to do it, its sure to raise eyebrows. I'm determined to get this resolved as its not interfering with porn surfing, its interfering with productivity.

seems better now, anyone else experiencing this ?

Noticed same thing last night. Speeds back to what they used to be before December and latency was changing between sub 40ms (standard) and 120ms local. Significantly better than the last 3 months, but not quite as good as it was yet. It is such a massive relief!

Unfortunately ADSL is a "best effort service", so if there best effort is giving you 56k speed then sorry for you, ADSL also is not based on any SLA's so Telkom dont need to repair the line in the 3-6working days ETA that they give you. It really unfortunately is one big stuff up and not much you can do cos they are the monopoly, CPA does nothing to help with this as far as I know. you can A stick it out and complain and moan and try escalate as much as possible or get an ISP to manage your line that has good contacts with managers.

TIP: if you log a line as faulty with Telkom 3 times in a 30 day period (ie. you get 3 different reference numbers from Telkom in a 30 day period) you can escalate it to the managers and ask them to start a special investigation on the line as they are not getting rid of the issue, As im sure you all know its not as simple as that. I have successfully logged 3 special investigations before and honestly its a really long painful process. One of my techs lines took over 8months to fix even with multiple special investigations on the line.

Hopefully you dont need to go this route as some have said the speeds seem better, will be much easier if they just fix:)

Seems our exchange is sorted. Damn it was frustrating.

everything still going good by me , pings local are on average 40 ms was originally 11ms before the problems but 40ms is way better than 1500 ms , also throuput is still great

Hope it lasts

You guys are lucky you got sorted... Our exchange in Bellville North is now close to a year of being FUBAR... Usually when you enter the dreaded list of overloaded exchanges, your chances are very slim of seeing a successfull resolution.

I think the reason why they fixed ours is that the problem started after they upgraded us to 10mbps, how can they break something by upgrading

I think after they upgraded the users speed they never upgraded the back haul which caused this disaster, if that's the case why bother the upgrade.

my DSL has gone to crap in the last month as well. curr im getting 1300 ms pings ... web pages dont even load. seems the back end exchange connection needs a upgrade.

Yoh that is really bad.

When will telkom straighten their act?? Damn, I wonder if a another fixed line company from the 1st world has tried to settle in SA and compete with Telkom?

In the same boat!

We have one IMAX, managed to get the details out of Telkom about our Exchange..

We have a 50mbps ATM link into the IMAX and 180 active dsl lines connected to it.

90 are 384kbps lines = 33.75mbps
60 are 1mbps lines = 60mbps
30 are 4mbps lines = 120mbps
Total of 213.75mbps

So we need a extra 163.75 mbps extra capacity to get all the lines running 100%

But if you take into account Telkom's 20:1 contention ratio we should only have 10mbps ATM link, so they think this is well within spec to their design!

But Telkom told me they can't do any upgrades at the moment.

Thanks to the tech who emailed the stats on our exchange i now have a understanding of how poorly the network is designed.

So glad I live in PMB no chance of congestion here maybe you should move here :D

The worst place to be is in Durban, Jhb & Cape Town.

I absolutely hate it when they say they cant upgrade their network, just shows how useless and what good for nothing they really are. I hope Telkom hits the ground hard one day.

Why cant another company go into the fixed line market ?

Hi there,

I'm on the MEYERSDAL (RMEY04) Exchange, which is also heavily congested. What is the process to effectively log an complaint with Telkom and have this resolved?

Thanks

Do not bother with call center
Find a local Telkom techician (try your luck around the exchange) and ask for DSLAM Maintenance Supervisor's name and number

Make sure you have eliminated any problems on your home setup
1) Conduct thorough Speedtests to the same servers in Joburg, Cape Town
and I normally use the Vodafone, Newbury , UK server for international tests.
2) Purchase a small 1 Gb package from another ISP and conduct tests using different
ISP to the same Speedtest servers
3) Include some traceroutes use pingplotter (free version) and document your
traceroutes to these speedtest servers.
4) Conduct tests during the day and night especially 7-8am and 4-6pm and then
later on say 00:00-01:00 when most of your neighbours are asleep
and not using their ADSL - Use as a reference
