True ... but hamster approved the outback:cool:

agreed, the Outback is a wonderful tourer for those long gravel roads in Southern Africa.

However, the interior is not very refined if you're looking for that little bit of extra pampering.

... for a middle-aged lady who wants to have something to commute in but also something that isn't useless off-road.

Her price range is about R300 000 - R350 000.

I've seen Toyota RAV models and Toyota Fortuner 4x2 models in this price range. She mentioned an interest in the RAV but I wonder if the Fortuner might not be a better deal.

Dude, in that price range, for a comfortable drive as a commuter, as well as amazing off-road, look at a Jeep Wrangler CRD Sahara Unlimited ...

I didn't have alot of hope for it off-road, but that thing climbs where my Defender goes, and and extremely comfortable drive on road

Biggest mistake you can make, I don't care what people say. The in-law's Discovery blew its diff with 30 000km on the clock and most of that was long distance with precious little time being spent offroad.

Like most manufacturers, some vehicles do have problems. I had a Tdi 90, no problems. My Disco 2 LRSA replaced after 10 000km, and I am currently driving the new Defender 110 Puma, without any problems.

Buy an Escalade with 24's on and air ride suspension!

Sorry, there's nothing I can add here, never really understood why people would want to off road, maybe I should try it one day.

you should...

is it not the other way around. i don't know why Defender drivers think a jeep wrangler will not follow. in fact i think a Defender will go to almost every where i go:D...

i will show you a thing or two...http://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/showpost.php?p=379196&postcount=332

Can you jeep tow a 12t ton truck? while carrying 7 passengers, loaded with all their gear for a year-long trek through Africa?

My old landy could. The only problem was that the customised V6 I used around 25 l/100km. was fun to play with though.:D

hahaha. guys the old wrangler was not the best 4X4 when it came to space as well as the version we had in SA was a 4L petrol:D(the sound of the beast:D) ... with the new wrangler it is the best 4X4Xfar as there is space(4 door) and there is an economical choice(2.8 CRD)...

Define off-road. Some people just want to drive on some roughish roads etc and if that was the case I would get something like a Rav or CRV.

No, it is not the other way around ... I haven't heard anything good about the Wrangler's off-road performance, so of course I was sceptical ... but was pleasantly surprised.

Funny, that I see the Jeep only in shallow water, and the Landy in deep water :p

+1 for Subaru Forester. Flippin amazing vehicles. Not for hardcore offroading but a real good all rounder that can drive on the sand, snow, gravel and dirt.
