I'd personally wait for Windows 7, though if you must buy an OS now I'd recommend Windows Vista x64.

I tried Linux before, but I'm not that much involved to appreciate it.
And who said anything about buying it?
Hmmm... having a legal PC is well worth it.
You can go out and make money without worrying about things like using illegal programs backfiring.

Some people keep suggesting that people wait for Windows 7. By the time it eventually launches, XP will about 9 years old. No ways I'll still want to use something that old still. Vista x64 really is a good system, it made a believer out of me. I was never rabidly anti Vista, rather I just couldn't care. After using it long enough now though, I find it hard to still use XP.

I just had a client switch back to XP from Vista after 6 months with it.
