And BEng(EE)? What's that? There is electronic, electrical (they only do cos131) and computer. Only Computer does 214.

Yeah I meant CE, my bad

Last year perhaps only 5 failed but before that there were a string of 21/22/24 students there, most of the engineers I talked to were repeaters.

Anyway I like I said it's pointless to argue the point here, you say CE students are better at computer science and I say no, there is no way to prove it either way

Oh and I forgot to mention. The highest mark in 2007 in COS214 was by a Computer Engineering student....

Really how do you know that?

I must say I'm siding with froot on this one (despite his "diss" :p ).

Just because Computer Engineers don't do as many "Cos" modules as the computer science guys doesn't mean that we're worse at it. How many "Exx" courses do they do? And what is the general trend, marks-wise? The programming subjects that Computer Engineers do are not limited to the "Cos" subjects. There's plenty of programming elsewhere.

As for the final year projects, which project were you referring to specifically?

The main focus of BEngComp is far from only control systems and signal processing. Signal processing pretty much the difference between electronic and computer engineering, although computer also takes part in that.

Can't, however agree with you there. Both Electronic and Computer guys take ELI, EMS, ESP...

The Electronic guys don't take computer-centered subjects (EAI, EAS, EHN), while (for now; it's changing) the Computer guys don't take EMZ etc...

So maybe you're right, the focus of B.Eng (Computer) is not ONLY signal processing and control systems, but it makes up a large portion of what Computer Engineers do in practice.

Yeah sure it does take up a big part of it, but it is not all of it.

Oh and that comment bout the Multimedia guys doing more computer science related modules... ? What was THAT all about... :\

I've seen them attempt ERS220 (Digital Systems) and EMK310 (Microprocessors) and want to commit suicide. Granted, they didn't have the background in EBN that we had, but then again, we didn't have the JAVA experience that THEY had (Cos 214: Mrs. Marshall kept referring to Java as if we should know it inside out).

Was apparently some kind of project where they had to design a security system of some sort, basically a webcam that can alert the user VIA SMS and such.

I agree you can't compare based on the amount of COS or Exx modules a certain student does but I certainly can draw up conclusions when I see the code they write and the fact that they don't seem to understand (or just disregard) programming principles.

But why not enlighten me as to what your hardest programming module was in BEng(CE), preferable a module that I can see on the EE website.

I did only c++ in COS214 (I heard it's been changed now). ERS is pretty bad if you didn't do EBN. Hee hee. EMK is not all that much of a joke either. COS214 was not that bad for me. Not a fan of design patterns so I decided to pass it first time.

Dude I did those modules and I was the one doing all the work, the engineers in my group sucked ass, but granted they were a useless bunch. The dude couldn't even operate the oscilloscope, granted most of the other CS students suck at it.

They do, they do almost everything CS does without mathematics

I enjoyed ERS a lot, really considered changing to CE but then I'd have to start over and the dreaded math :(

Learned a lot of usefull stuff there, but yeah I don't remember much Java in 214 we only did c++ programming and lots of it.

Strange I studied BSc(CS) specifically because it isn't a lot of work :p

BEng(EE) which I really wanted to do was just too much work (in terms of volume) and all the mathematics isn't a joke either.

By "courses" do you mean a degree (BSc/BEng)?
Yes I mean a degree, the amount of people on our helpdesk with degrees proves their use.

That was not a final year project, but a third year project (see EPE321: Software Engineering). The focus of that module is not programming, but rather project management.

It's difficult to say what the most difficult programming subject is, since subjects one person finds tough are not necessarily tough for others. Some of our tougher programming subjects are tough because of the mathematics involved (read "EAI310: Artificial Intelligence").

I'm not trying to say that we are better than you, but nor are you better than us. Our qualifications are aimed at different sectors and we tackle very different problems. This applies to our problem-solving abilities too.

Hmm, I don't think I'm going to comment on the quality of those certificates but the fact that you find them better than a BSc or CE degree is laughable.

Finally something we can agree on :p

Exactly ;)

Although programming is problem solving in essence unless you learned some kind of recipe.

Who presented the AI module btw? Wasn't Prof Andries Engelbrecht by any chance?

Must have been an Electronic Engineer :p

I still don't think Multimedia is even close to Engineering. They do poetry and stuff :\

Surely the math isn't THAT bad?

But programming is not the only form of problem-solving, agreed?

AI used to be presented by Prof Ettiene Barnard, but has since been taken over by Prof Olivier

Yes they aren't great at programming but they aren't that bad either ;)
Haven't seen any poetry though, perhaps we aren't thinking of the same thing

Surely the math isn't THAT bad?

Dude no way, that is too much for me, math bores the living daylights out of me I had enough after WTW114, and the dynamics didn't look fun either.
