What router do I need?

No it's cool, I just wish this wasn't so confusing.

I'll look around next week for a cool router and then post, and confirm with you guys if it will work.

If you want a router with a easy interface, big Wireless radius and fast speed take a look at the NETGEAR DGN2200M-100PES

Yes I know its a bit above your budget, but it will give you 0 troubles in the long run and if you do have a big house this router will defiantly be a good choice.

Hi there,
For home use I find Netgear products easy to use. I spent about R900 on the ADSL router (DGN300) which has 4 cable ports and supports 6 wireless devices in my house. The house is quite large (50 metres long) but I have wireless coverage throughout.
Do shop around though for pricing.

Regards

Tim

some input from me.

People call these ADSL devices routers, but in most cases its not only a router its a Switch/Router/Firewall and depending on its features its also a DHCP/VPN ect ect server. Just so you know ;-)

OK guys, I want this one:
http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/?categoryid=238&model=TL-WR1043ND

Good? Bad? Will it work with Telkom ADSL?

Not sure I understand what you needing this router for but surely the TP-Link W8960N is what you looking for?

Install Teamviewer on the pc's you want to enable file transfers on. Teamviewer is free for personal use and has a remote file transfer feature built in which is intuitive and reasonably quick (about 1.5mbps-2mbps).

That's not ADSL capable? Damn :(
(I told a guy at a computer shop I need a gigabit ADSL router and he pointed to that model.... eish)

Anyway, I've upped my budget to around R800...surely I can get something with 4 Gigabit ports, 300mbs wireless + ADSL support?
I'm looking for a TP-Link branded one.

@Sandman - not sure why you want me to use teamviewer... does it even run on OpenELEC/Linux?
1.5mbps is just too damn slow for my Media Centre needs.

I see this one is below R500 on dbg.co.za and also has the design that I like, and very similar to the W8960N
http://www.dbg.co.za/product_info.php?cPath=1_55_57&products_id=735

If this one will work just as well I would rather take this version, than the square shaped model....

btw thanks for the help guys, i'm almost ready to purchase, just need you guys to confirm :D

They both identical other than the external design. The more flamboyant styling is the new version of the original 8960. Although don't quote me on this.

Ah okay - got it :p

These days tech moves so fast each itteration of the model number makes it different in some way, and this causes confusion for me
they just make too many options :D

I'm getting it from a PC shop so i'm gonna ask the guy for the TP-Link W8960N or W8961ND

Thanks fellas, I owe you guys!

Apparently the chipset on the 8960 is different to the 8961, better on the 8960. Although don't quote me on this.

EDIT: They have a branch in Milnerton, Uniterm Direct and they deliver.
