What do you think is necessary to fix Eskom? What is the government doing wrong?

Also, nothing, the people that can do not have the will or incentive to do what needs to be done.

1) Change Eskom's mandate from generation/transmission-distribution to transmission/distribution only. Its new name should be Etkom. (Electricity Transmission commission)
2) All existing Eskom power stations will then become individual entities that are initially owned by the provincial governments that they sit in, and are encouraged to sell shares to the private sector to become privately owned entities.
3) National government then nationalises all municipal infrastructure into the new Etkom entity.
4) Etkom can only make money by charging the suppliers of electricity to the grid a transmission fee.
5) Electricity customers on this grid then choose which power company they want to buy electricity from. This happens via Etkom when they either setup their account, or when they purchase prepaid electricity.
6) Electricity suppliers can determine how they set their pricing. Etkom should supply each supplier with the billing data for each customer.Such as when they use their electricity and how much.
7) All electricity suppliers are subject to the same laws regarding emissions, health and safety etc in order for them to compete fairly.
8) Types of energy suppliers can be: other countries like Mozambique, mines with their backup generators, the existing renewable energy suppliers, the initially state owned power companies, consortiums of household consumers that supply rooftop power, nuclear power ships from Russia
9) Indignant users of electricity are supplied vouchers by their municipalities such that they can purchase electricity.

This is broadly similar to what the Netherlands did with their electricity generation.

To say this would be an upset to the status quo would be putting it mildly. However, it would effectively and permanently solve the problem of energy distribution in the country.

I think that they should systematically retrain their technical staff to do solar installations and wind installations and then make every new dwelling in SA a compulsory solar installation that can be totally independent, and then start in the rural areas where there is no electricity and start installing solar and/or wind to all homes, schools, hospitals and clinics and police stations. (with tech to track any items stolen or tampered with) and to remotely monitor it for possible theft etc. This approach will have also the added benefit that people might then migrate less to bigger cities and towns if they have electricity. It will initially be slow going but will later speed up. As the rural areas migrate to solar we then start with the bigger rural towns. This is just my idea because coal is 1) gonna run out, 2) cause more problems because of environmental pollution . I think if people get retrained they will be able to leave the coal mines slowly and find jobs in solar/wind power, may be even retrained to conserve and clean polluted water systems.

so much to do. i would say start with reducing their own burdens.

allow IPPs to handle some load. give themselves some breathing room. in fact, arrange with various IPPs to provide power while they perform required maintenance

they are overstaffed... it has to be reduced, has to. otherwise all and any discussion is just an act.

Remove the excess staff that were employed after 1996. Place competent people in charge. Government must stop supplying free electricity to the "previously disadvantaged". Yes.... expand infrastructure so that everyone can have access but what you consume you should pay for like everyone else. No "flat rate" charges.

Government should get rid of all the useless incompetent corrupt political appointed family and ofiends of the anc. Start by appointing competent people (black, white, brown, etc) with genuine qualifications (not fake).
Begin to recoup assets from those thieves that caused the problems by paying themselves those billions.....

Employ qualified personnel, and only give them realistic salary, with a bonus when they succeed in bringing it back to when it was a successful company.

The recouping can never happen... the money is long gone, probably overseas...
