What specs to play BFBC2 and COD4?

Um just check reviews as far as I know (or what I remember) the 512mb DDR5 out performs the 1GB DDR3
What res are you gunna be playing at?
Just make sure you check out reviews before you buy

Remember that buying a 1kW PSU won't mean that your PC will consume 1kW!

Those 2 AOpen PSU's are pretty decent ones (80% efficient + PFC). AFAIK they are the same as the FSP400-60APN & FSP450-60APN: http://www.fsp-group.com/english/1_product/2_detail.asp?mainid=1&fid=176&proid=655

The AOpen 450W (or FSP400-60APN) would be more than enough if you go for a low end graphics card like the Radeon HD 5570.
Like I got a Core i7 860 + Radeon HD 5670 running from a CoolerMaster Extreme Power Plus 460W, and the max that the PC consumed that I measured was 179W/264VA.

I would really advise you not to go for anything lower than 400W, due to those power supplies being cheaply made and they can't provide enough current (AMPs) for the CPU & graphics cards with their +12V rails. Stay away from the Gigabyte Odin series, unless you're going for the Odin 585, which is comparable with a decent 400W PSU.

For a gaming PC, your graphics card should be the most expensive component in the PC.
You would really see a big performance difference between the HD 5570 and the HD 5770.

Good point thanks, didn't realise the big DDR3/DDR5 difference, whoops! :noob:

Thanks Pada for the PSU info, appreciated :)

Ok I've thought about it more and decided to take the plunge and spend around R6k on a new machine so that I can play BFBC2 :D

I wanna go Quad Core so that BC2 can be happy :P
I'll also be using the machine for Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator.

Here are the options I've come up with so far.

Platform Option 1:
CPU: i5 760/750 ~ R1800 (R1750 @ DP including shipping, link)
Mobo: Asus P7H55-M <-- is this fine for i5 (nakedpeanut you recommended it for i3)? ~ R1050

Platform Option 2:
CPU:Athlon II X4 Quad Core 640 ~ R1050
Mobo: ???

Platform Option 3:
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE ~ R1600
Mobo: ???

Then in terms of GPU I'm thinking either:

5770 1GB @ ~ R1600
or
GTX 460 1GB ~ R2100

and then plus
Memory: 4GB DDR3 (2x2GB Dual) ~ R900, any particular?
PSU: Gigabyte 450W ~ R430 (link) will this still be sufficient?
HDD: Seagate 500GB 7200.12 SATA (existing)
Case: (existing)

Advice/input/recommendations? please ;)

I got myself a PS3 recently and BFBC2 (R200 at Musica). Play online each night without issues and its the only FPS I've every managed to play on console. Was cheaper than upgrading my PC

@cbrunsdonza: Thanks for the suggestion, but I need the PC for Photoshop & Illustrator work :) Also I'm not too keen on FPS on console:P

@SharkBait: not really, don't mind buying around, as long as it still makes sense after shipping costs :D

Kwel,

I would recommend:

Intel I3 530 ~ R908 @PCint
GTX 460 1Gig ~ R2100 @ComX
Asus P7P55D LE ~ R1266 @PCint
4Gig DDR3 1600 ~ R950 @WootWare
Cooler Master RS 550 ~ R826 @ PH

Then, later on, you can OC this badboy. :D

And for those of you whom want to complain about my Dual Core choice, click HERE ;)

Thanks SharkBait. So would I need to OC the CPU to get similar FPS in BC2 as I would with an i5 760?

You should get the amd 965 with a cheaper 700 buck mobo. With all the console ports you will struggle on a dual core.

Don't buy a dual core for gaming. You will regret it.

M4N68T-M ASUS AMD Socket AM3, Nvidia GeForce 7025, 2000MT/s, 2xDual DDR3 1800(O.C), 1xPCI-x16, On Board VGA, 1xPCIx1, 2xPCI, 1xATA133, 4xSATA(Raid 0,1,5), Gbe Lan, 8ch-Sound HD, Max 10xUSB, microATX R 479 excl. R 546 incl.

AMD Phenom II X4 965, 8MB, AM2+, 3.4GHZ L2 Cache Quad Core R 1 385 excl. R 1,578 incl.

Can anyone see why this would be a bad idea?

I found this article though that had very different results for BC2 for Dual vs Quad (Quad pwned Dual) compared to the article on TH. ?

i5 750 R2243.41.
ASUS P7H55-M LX LGA1156 Dual-Channel DDR3 PCI-E 2.0 - R881.13
Kingston Hyper-X KHX1600C8D3K3/3GX 3x1GB Kit DDR3-1600 1.7v CL8 - R918.82
Club3D CGAX-57724IDP ATI Radeon HD5770 1GB GDDR5 128-bit PCI-E 2.0 - R1675.18
Gigabyte ODIN 585W 24-Pin Power Supply - R496.44

Total R6214.98

All form Prophecy.co.za

With this rig you are sorted due. I promise you that.

Edit: PS add another R300-500 then you get a crossfire board, then in future you get another 5770 and you got a monster running.

Uli, I have a few problems with your suggestion:
1) With a Socket 1156 motherboard you should get RAM modules in pairs of 2 and not in pairs of 3
2) I would stay away from Gigabyte Odin PSU's
3) You can get the i5 760 for basically the same price as the i5 750
4) The graphics card should be the most expensive component of a gaming PC, hence go for at least an nVidia GTX460 or AMD HD5850

I would definitely opt for a quad core CPU over a dual core one, even if the dual core CPU has HT. That one article was the first one that I've seen where adding more cores didn't show a big increase in FPS. If they've done their research properly, they would've added a bigger graphics card and dual core CPU's (with & without HT) to the mix.

I'm all for the suggestion that killadoob made, although I would take a motherboard with a slightly newer and better chipset, like the Asus M4A785-M AMD 785G for R880.

so killadoob and Pada 965 over i5 760, why? :)

Was starting to lean towards i5 760 but convince me otherwise why I shouldn't :P ?

There's also a chance I can get the i5 760 for R1600 from Digital Planet (R1659 less Mweb 8% discount R132.72 + R75 shipping).

Also...

PSU: Will only be running 1x SATA 7200 + 1 x optical drive. Is a R800 PSU necessary?

GPU: I'm leaning towards GTX 460 1GB.

Shot a lot. Flippin amped to get my new rig sorted.

Basically all i boards are very good compared to entry level LGA 775 boards you cant compare them... So I would say even the entry level i boards/LGA 1135 you would be ok with them and are very good boards.
My wife has the P7H55-M-USB3 with an i3 530 and it over clocks like a dream stock, from 2,9 to 4,2.
YEs I agree rather go for 2x2 gig modules ram for about the same price.
If money is not a problem then yes rather go for the ATI 5870, but if that is a problem then rather try and get a crossfire board for a bit more and a ATI 5770 then upgrade later with another 5770 as 2x 5770 perform almost as good as the 5870 and for allot less cash, plus 2 x 5770 outperform 2 x 460 easily, but it also depends on what games you want to play as each game is optimized differently, but for BFBC2, ATI is the partner in crime ... :)

There's no point going intel as all their sockets are changing next year. AMD also gives you better band for buck. If you're on a budget you could even get a Athlon x4 and still get good framerates.

GPU: the GTX460 1gig looks good. Going for just over 2grand at prophecy...

For power supply get the coolermaster GX550watt.

No i was saying rather get a 965 than a dual core, get the intel quadcore. Just don't buy a dual core for gaming. It was mostly in response to the i3 sharkbait posted. I just gave you the 965 because amd's bottom end mobo's are awesome for gaming. So you could get the 965 plus low end board for the same price as the i3 :D and mobo or there abouts.

If you eyeing out the 760 then gooi it :D

Yes but dont get the 460 with 780 odd ram you must get the one with 1gig ram

... plus 2 x 5770 outperform 2 x 460 easily...
I have NEVER seen that happening! I know the 5770's scale well, but the 460's scaling are exceptional!
I had 2x GTX460 768MB and the framerate almost doubled going from 1x GTX460 to 2x.

You'll never regret buying a CoolerMaster GX550W PSU.
You should be able to get away with the Gigabyte Odin 585 for an i5 760 + GTX460, but then again,
you could also get away with a Corsair CX400W.
