Lenovo indicated that the WinRT tablets will be ~$300 cheaper than the Intel-based ones. So the Surface RT model should be affordable.

That is exactly why i like the android tablets.. Very flexible..and you customize the whole tablet to your needs!
and yes thats kinda what i want as well a on the go tablet.

but once again..iPad looks so smooth and nippy! where android has a small lag when you swipe for example!..

all in all i think i decided to wait to early next year for a Tablet..(android)..with the samsung Note 10.1 coming out with quad core processor .and sure many others to with quad graphics and processors ...well lets just say a lot improved tablet than the galaxy xoom2 ect ect..

@Synaesthesia, I have read that review and it is just one review. The ONLY thing the new iPad has going for it is its display... otherwise hardware wise the Note 10.1 is better and also runs android... enough said.

I have ipad 1 and 2 and had iphone 4 and 3gs and 3g and then I got a Samsung Galaxy Note. Since I have had the Note I have never touched my ipads again. There is no point in using a piece of equipment running a inferior operating system.

I bought mine second hand off guy in Paarl, it was only 5months old, I have not switched the thing off since I got it.
Have an Android phone so that has put me off Android for now.
Have worked with different type of android tabs,3 of them had lag and no ICS when I used them, the other had ICS but was custom ROM.

I like the size of the ipad 2 as I read many Magazines in pdf format and they fit snuggly whereas on the Galaxy Tab 10.1, they feel stretched but that was only after fiddling for 10min +
iPad is fast with no lag at all and does everything I want from it, i only paid R2900 for the experience when all other Android Tabs bar Chinese junk where over R5k+

I was actually going to go for an Android tab albeit a cheap one, luckily a fellow forumite convinced me the ipad was the ideal choice.
My next tablet I'll have to see whats out there, IOS is boring but get's the Job done and done well, Android I like being able to fiddle.......oh and expandable memory like SD.

The display is kind of a big deal on a tablet. It's basically the whole experience.

Android vs iOS, OK I prefer iOS, if you prefer Android, that's your choice, no problem. The Galaxy Note is a super device with great performance, but this particular tablet seems to have huge performance problems, looks like the Touchwiz software is highly unoptimized and the display is quite low quality by modern standards, it's just not good value for money. I'd recommend an Asus Transformer or Nexus 7.

Yeah a friend of mine does marketing for them. He played with the units quite a bit. Says the 10.1 IPS model is nice. The lower spec ones not so much. Impossible to upgrade beyond 2.3 for one thing. And a fairly poor screen:

Anandtech and Engadget reviews said basically the same thing. Underdeveloped, slow, plastic feeling, poorly implemented support for the stylus, and Touchwiz makes it a nightmare to use.
 
New Nexus 7, import it yourself. $250 and should work out way under R3000, even after shipping and taxes. Otherwise Galaxy 10.1, can get it for a similar price from overseas
 
Nexus 7 all the way only limitation is that its only wi-fi or micro sd card slot but I mean it a tab for R3000 on Expansys.
1. You can overcome the wifi limitation by opening a wi-fi hotspot on your Android or Apple.
2. 8gb is too little then you can go for the 16gb but I wouldn't go for the 16gb it too expensive compaired to the 8gb
 
The iPad is a wonderful experience. However, the Galaxy tabs are quite good.
Since you want to watch movies on the tablet, I would recommend the Galaxy since you don't have to convert your movies to mp4 (iPad). There are alternatives to watching avi movies on the iPad though.

You mentioned that the iPad can't be found for less than 400pm, so I'm assuming you want a contract and not a cash purchase.

Depends on price I'd say. The iPads are cheaper than the Galaxy tabs. The Galaxy tab 2 is an option. But I'd stick with Samsung or Apple, I'm not sure about the other brands.
 
Nexus 7 for R3000 or Motorola Xoom 2 or 1 are great tablets. The Motorola skin is quite close to stock Android OS. The US version of the Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi has gotten Jelly Bean update OTA not sure in South Africa...... I would get the Motorola Xoom 2 if I could but Nexus 7 is my first choice.
