Youtube is extremly slow on my connection, i swear dial-up was quicker than this. It takes about 1 minute to load 2 seconds of video. This has been going on for months! Often web pages also hang and i have to refresh to get them to load. Is this normal? Im losing my mind

Telkom 384mb/s (or is it 364? anyway)

Go to www.speedtest.net and run a test then go to www.pingtest.net and run a test

Speedtest measures thoroughput and pingtest measures latency.

If you decide to run a international test, run it to Paris

There is no reason for you not to get the maxium out of your line to a local speedtest server (dbn cpt or jhb, doesnt matter), if you are then you may be getting errors on your line, I suggest you consult your ISP and telkom.

Hope this helps

Here are my results (when the test actually didn't just fail completely):

Im in stellenbosch.

Pingtest:

Johburg: Ping 182ms. Jitter 250ms. Packet loss test failed. D* rating

UK, Maidenhead: Ping 592ms. Jitter 196ms. F* rating

Speedtest doesn't want to work right now

I'm in stellenbosch as well and was also upgraded to a 4mb line. Connection is proper ****e.

Are you in Welgevonden by any chance?

Tried a speedtest this morning and it was full speed.

It seems to me that Stellenbosch's main pipe (if there is only one) is a little unstable. My connection has been up and down since the beginning of the year.

I'm also in Stellenbosch (in Die Boord), and my connection is very stable. I'm using splitting traffic, and using IS Local only accounts from OpenWeb for these tests...

Here are my results of my 4Mbps ADSL connection, which I'm accessing via a PPTP VPN over a 20Mbps Wireless link :)

* For some reason the pingtest.net shows a latency of 250ms which is absurd. Its supposed to be 40-50ms, like when I'm pinging www.aardvark.co.za - see below:

ping www.aardvark.co.za
Reply from 196.25.211.106: bytes=32 time=44ms TTL=116
Reply from 196.25.211.106: bytes=32 time=42ms TTL=116

See what happens if you ping www.aardvark.co.za or www.take2.co.za
You can also do speed tests by downloading local content from like ftp://mirror.ac.za , ftp://ftp.isgaming.co.za/ and http://www.microsoft.com (their content are mirrored locally by Akamai)

Damn what are the chances.... 0.o
I am also in the Welgevonden suburb of Stellenbosch, and since about 2 - 3 weeks ago my international speeds(Youtube, gmail, World of Warcraft) has been absolutely horrible. I am on a 4mbit line and am getting max speeds of about 300-400kbits on speedtest.net to the Paris test server. The local servers are much faster and I am sometimes able to get close to my line speed, which is 4mbit. This is the same on ALL of the ISP's I tried! 2 of the bandwidth packages I bought were completely unshaped and still the international speed was really bad.

About 3 weeks ago maintenance was done on the Cloetesville exchange(which services Welgevonden) lasting a whole Sunday and ADSL was down for that time. When I phoned to find out what the hell was up Telkom said that they were doing "pre-emptive maintenance" because they detected a problem on our exchange.
I might be mistaken but I am now almost certain that our problems started right after that maintenance. Unfortunately at the time the SAT3 cable also chose to break so I attributed my slow speeds to that, but now the problem is still persisting after SAT3 has been fixed. : /
Can anyone else in the Welgevonden suburb of Stellenbosch confirm that they are facing similiar issues?

I logged a call yesterday for this Problem and followed up today. Apparently the maintenance done a couple of weeks ago was due to some adsl users not being able to authenticate to their ISP's.
Telkom are going to run some tests on my line now, but due to the nature of this problem I doubt that will reveal anything : / If some other Stellies people are having a similiar problem I urge you to please contact them as well. It can only help to make Telkom aware that more than one user is experiencing the same problem in that area ;)

Here's hoping that this can be fixed...

I'm also in Welgevonden . Spoke to 3 different people last month regarding this. I have a constant 570 ping to any local server @ speedtest.net , making games or streaming a absolute joke. They told me that the " cards " on the exchange would get replaced on the 3rd of March .. well I can see very little improvement today . Ping went from 570 to 540 , awesome .. still utterly useless.

i have same problem but in pmb get 200 ms latency to durban speedtest server and over 300 ms to Joburg one.
My youtube videos sometimes are slow to load.

1171 ms to london via speedtest

yet my gaming in wow seems fine at 600 ms on shaped account and 250 ms to 350 ms on unshaped

superfantasties, post your SNR margins & line attenuation values here. I reckon that your line is possibly in a bad shape or that you're simply too far away from the exchange.
You can find these values on most ADSL routers' web interface under either Diagnostics or Info.

Hey. These were the closest thing i could find on my router (mega 100wr2)

US Margin 22
DS Margin 24

DS Line Attenuation 33
US Line Attenuation 21

What do they mean?
