What the SEACOM cable break looked like

In terms of pulling strength, these cables can handle A LOT. Once bent though, it snaps relatively easily.

The actual fiber section of the cable is thin enough to pass through the inside of a pencil without touching the sides. It's all the padding, kevlar, steel and waterproofing that makes it thicker.

some of the repeaters the submarine cables use are huge too, weigh tons

Heh. Well, a single strand of unprotected fiber is generally about the thickness of a human hair, and it's impossible for me to break by pulling on both ends with bare hands. I'll cut my fingers before it'll break.
