I actually forgot that I had one of the original iPad mini. Decided to give to parents to use for Facebook, email and Kindle (they are using an old android cheapie I bought many years ago).
Unfortunately it has iOS 9.3.5 and can’t support a newer iOS. Which also mean I can’t install the kindle app because it needs a later iOS.
Understandably the hardware starts lagging the software and the apps will not always work with the older hardware. But this begs the question of what to do with old devices, rather than chucking them away? Are there any uses for them still? At least with old phones you can still make calls
