What would you choose, E620 or E220, and why?

And you'll be making a beeg mistake! ;)
Dell FTW! :D

I have been meaning to ask. I decided to take a data bundle and voice contract. Now I take it I will only be getting one SIM card.

Here's the question: if the SIM is in the E220 and I am using it on 3G / HSDPA, what will happen when I receive a voice call to my number?
I have been told you cannot do voice on the E220, but you can do SMS.

Will callers receive engaged tones?
Must I get a 2nd SIM or what options am I faced with to ensure people can still get hold of me while using 3G HSDPA on my notebook?

My work is of such a nature I must be 24 7 365 available, hence my question.
And?

The E220 UI can send and receive SMS but no it can't make or receive calls so if a caller calls you and you using the sim at the time in the E220 it should route the call to voicemail so I would suggest another Sim

Thanks, what are my options for a second SIM?

At this stage I would suggest you take out another contract on Prodata and use that as your data SIM otherwise I would suggest Dual call 2 but that's only going to be launched in March sometime

Well the only other option is to apply for dual call and use your dual sim or get a MYCHOICE TOP UP Contract

Without a 24-month contract, if I want to buy a E620 once-off (say I am prepaid), where would I be able to purchase one at a normal price?

I was quote R2447 by MTN Morningside, which is totally nuts.

I was more hoping for R1250 or so?

Or is there anybody with a secondhand one I can take over for say R1000 ?

Check Classifieds on this forum or go through the pages on this forum I'm sure I saw someone selling one for R1200

Thanks MTNDD!

IF i would be interested in signing up for 24 months, should I be waiting for the Huawei E630 to be bundled with a price plan?

(i.e. will I be getting up to 400KB/s on the MTN network then?)

@AmaDownload

What you can do is PM me your details in terms of bundled offers with the E620 there are some already available if you PM me your number I'll get one of the guys from MTNSP to give you a buzz and they can check for you to see what the latest package with a data card initials

In terms with your speed it's difficult to assess if you'll actually get up to 400kb what I'd do is borrow one from a friend get a prepaid sim pack and load let's say R100 and covert it into a bundle and try it out and see if you're happy with the speeds you do get

Thanks MTNDD,

do you think i should hold on for the 3.6Mbit version? (it's almost Feb already, and I'm sure MTN is about to upgrade again?)

Or will the R630 Huawei not be available for another year in SA?

Why don't you take the E220 instead? Don't know if you know but it is already 3.6Mbps capable.

Or are there specific reasons why you want the E620/630?

Oh, gee, no, I didn't check that...

Wow, okay, yes, now I think I should rather go for that....

MTNDD do you know of any good retail offering with this card bundled? Or alternatively a good once-off price on prepaid or so?

The E220 is a USB HSDPA 3.6Mbps modem.
There are some things you cannot do on it though, like making voice calls (where the E620/630 can) and you cannot attach an external antennae to it (which the E620/630 can)

but the E620/630 is PCMCIA, which is a problem for me.

The software for managing the E220 and the E620/630 is also different. Not significantly as I understand, so don't know if this is good or bad, from reports the management software for the E620 is excellent.

I am also choosing the E220 for myself.

The ones I saw were black.

Can someone tell me if we will get a card swop out for the E620, the last time the network was upgraded i seem to remember that users on the older cards were upgraded free of charge.

That was Vodacom, although it sounded wonderful, it turned out they charged you more if you got the HSDPA capable card, even if you only had a GPRS or EDGE signal. Some people even downgraded their HSDPA cards to EDGE only cards to avoid paying extra.

Took the E220 in Dec06. Actually my wife chose it.

We took a 3G pcmcia card in Dec05 and sure its faster than using my iMate connection for internet browsing. However in 1year the pcmcia card proved to have some cons attached.

The E220 is a usb modem, will work with my desktop too, or any other computer I plug it into... It install everything itself, I like. Its a lot faster than the 3G card, no competition.

The easy of use across PCs did it for us, it yip its a lot faster than I expected.
