What would you choose, E620 or E220, and why?

Hi guys, I've made the plunge and as we speak my porting request to MTN is being done.
I've decided on the N73, which I am yet to receive, but I am planning to use it as a modem with 3G connected to my laptop.

Now, I can either use the phone on 3G connected via bluetooth or USB to the laptop. This is all good.

But, I have been told the E620 data card is really good as well as the software that comes with it.
Then there is the smaller E220 data card which is the USB version, and the only difference apparently is that you cannot make voice calls through the E220 card.
This is not such a big thing for me.

However, the E620 is only PCMCIA and my notebook only has PCI Express. Now, I can get the converter, but ....

I need your guys' advice on this one. Must I take any of the data cards, pros, cons ?
or just stay with the phone as my modem?

e220- 3.8 mbp/s
e620-1.8 mbp/s
e220 no sms
e620 sms
couple of other things but yeah id go for the e220:)

I hear the N95 is here in January...

This combines high speed data (3.6mbps HSDPA) and phone. I was personally wanting to do the same thing N73 + datacard, however considering that waiting will give me everything in one device I prefer that route.

Data card issues though, you'll have to get a seperate simcard with a different data bundle, using your phone means data bundle can be used on phone or PC access.

As for the datacards, the E220 is likely to last a lot longer due to it being USB and all the E620 is on it's way out with many laptops not even having a PCMCIA anymore.

Thanks snakepit, I think I will do that, plus it is small form factor. :)

@damian24, it was time for me to make the move, my contract expired in June already and my current phone is at the stage where, when I receive calls it just switches off, so ye, people aint digging this new "feature" too much ;)

hell thats nothing! try your internet speed going from demon to paupau when your aunt calls to wish you a merry christmas!

Does the E220 have a connection for an external antenna?

lilDeath, don't tell us you got suckered into buying a laptop with an ExpressCard slot?

What device needs more than the 1000Mbps that you can get from a 32-bit CardBus slot?

I would go for the E220 it's 3.6 ready so when we turn that on this year some time you don't have to go out and buy another modem e.g. the E620 is only 1.8 ready

Just my 2 cents

Not suckered, conscious choice I made. Notebook only has PCI Express, even gfx. It's not a normal notebook ;) :p
Ah well, I'll always have USB :D

Thanks MTNDD. I have decided to take the E220 as it is best for mobility and the USB connection, the fact that it is 3.6 is just an unexpected advantage :D

Glad you weren't suckered, I think some of the hardware manufacturer's jumped the gun in pushing the ExpressCard socket before any cards were available.

I notice that IBM/Lenovo still have models with PCMCIA/CardBus and Sony have a nice laptop that has both PCMCIA/CardBus AND ExpressCard slots.

Sounds like my next laptop is going to be a Sony

And you'll be making a beeg mistake! ;)
Dell FTW! :D

I have been meaning to ask. I decided to take a data bundle and voice contract. Now I take it I will only be getting one SIM card.

Here's the question: if the SIM is in the E220 and I am using it on 3G / HSDPA, what will happen when I receive a voice call to my number?
I have been told you cannot do voice on the E220, btu you can do SMS.

Will callers receive engaged tones?
Must I get a 2nd SIM or what options am I faced with to ensure people can still get hold of me while using 3G HSDPA on my notebook?

My work is of such a nature I must be 24 7 365 available, hence my question.

I've tried DualCall, in theory it should work but in practice MTN's service is currently not like it used to be. And then trying to fix the many problems by phoning 808 or whatever means was a failure (Pitbull did sort out the double billing though, thanx). But there are people who could get it working.

The Pro-Data contract is probably the safest route especially if it is really important to be available 24/7. R10 a month, separate sim, billing etc.

And you could like me, try out a VC prepaid sim on the E220 which is faster and better signal for me. Can’t load bundles on VC prepaid though.

Good day,

Well for now Pro-Data will work - Keep you eye out for Dual call 2 due to be launched in March sometime
