So uhm, I eventually swallowed the bitter pill and accepted the reality that, staying with Snow (2015 Ford Ikon) was loosing value quicker then anything.

Ended up accepting the poor trade and settling the balance.

Yes, I'm car-less, which brings me to the topic of this post.

I'm a die hard Japanese car guy for reasons you reading this would know. I love them. Never looking at a Ford again (they are unnecessarily complicated)

I require assistance in choosing my next Japanese child.

My list of non negotiables:
Must be 6 speed manual
Non turbo
Cruise control
Hatchback
Something that I can fiddle with on the weekend (DIY friendly).

Short list of cars I can think of:
2014-2017 Suzuki Swift Sport #in Grey or Yellow )

2012-2015 Toyota Yaris/Auris (very rare with cruise control but aftermarket options are plentiful)

2009-2013 Honda Civic Hatch VXI spec

Anything I missed? What would you do?
Opinions would be greatly appreciated

I think you've pretty much answered your own questions. Given your requirements, I would look at them in this order:

Toyota Auris
Suzuki Swift Sport
Honda Civic

But that is my personal preference. Good luck!

Any alternatives I can add to the list you can think of/recommend?

I am partial to the Koreans but to add to your list:

Mazda 2/3
Lexus CT200h ($$$)

I'm afraid that's all that I can think of, off the bat
The Lexus CT200h is a damn nice car, super rare and expensive. Would have added it to the list to but doesn't it come in automatic only? Another one I would have also added to the list was the Subaru WRX STI hatch but, jus like the Lexus, super rare.

No, never owned one but I know that VXI is the top spec and Honda in general is bulletproof when it comes to reliability.
Yip couldn't agree more on that. Honda in general. My dad has his Honda CRV 2.0 RSVI for the past 8 years trouble free. It's so trouble free he doesn't even let me drive the thing.

Not sure if they are actually available in manual. But yeah, quite pricey so I wasn't sure if this would be in your budget. Just spitting out options so to speak

Isn't the Mazda basically rebranded Fords?
If speaking about the Mk. 3 Focus, technically the Ford is a Mazda but the Mazda isn't a Ford. Some of them are assembled in Mazda plants, so the Focus is born from the Mazda and not vice versa.

I think both are quite reliable, but platform sharing is quite common in the automotive world, think Kia/Hyundai, VW/Audi/Porsche, Renault/Nissan, etc.

Jus done some research on them. On the Mazda 3,its basically only the MPS model that comes with cruise control and it's turbocharged . And well the Mazda 2 uhm its a Mazda 2, not much curb appeal nor aftermarket accessories.

No option to retrofit CC to a non-MPS Mazda?

Really liking the Auris option IMHO, maybe go drive one and see how you feel about it?

selling a car at a poor trade value when you are concerned about it losing value seems a tad silly to me, ecspecially without a cost effective plan going forward in the bag

As usual with everything here in SA, most companies choose to cater for Toyota or VW/Audi chaps with cruise control. There is the option of a universal setup, but that comes in at R10k. Uhm the Auris is a safe option, plenty of accessories to pick choose and refuse with them. It's a Toyota after all.

You haven't given us a budget range to work in...

But was your Ford ikon costing you stupid money to maintain every month or just the repayments?

I agree. It was a silly mistake in the first place to have even gotten it (hard to admit). But ready to move on, doing proper planning this time (Cash), that's for sure.

Max range R150k mark.

The Ikon came about from a bad deal (so it started out as a bitter relationship from the get go)

With the Ikon, no, it was economical, easy to maintain and Yada Yada Yada. But you know when you jus cannot love something like you thought you could?

I know that... But I wouldn't take a bath on something like that.. I would stick it out until I got to break even on the finance.
