Whats better than Ubuntu?

What is better than Ubuntu.. hmmm... the list is too long to name, and because I'm very biased, I'll just say everything else.
:p

What you should try out:
Fedora (not my cup of tea though)
Mandriva
SuSE

Nice to play with:
Vector Linux
Slackware (You can't say you have meddled with Linux if you never installed Slackware!)

And once you know your way:
Sabayon (Now were talking!)
Arch Linux
Gentoo

"better" is a bit too generic of a term here...

what aspect are you looking for an improvement on?

Ubuntu is the "best" for a few aspects... and average for others, and the worst for the rest... it all depends on what you're looking for in an OS.

Whats better than ubuntu...

Windows 7

Now I guess I have to run damn fast

Why is mandriva better?

I'm a complete newbie on linux. So far Ubuntu 9.10 has been great. Very little need to use terminal almost 100% of my day to day stuff can be done in Ubuntu.

the grub loader and the hassle it causes when one needs to format a partition or swap drives, has put me off linux. too many times i had to reinstall linux because it couldnt find the bootloader, and i did my research on how to solve this and the supposed solutions didnt work.

i just hope they fix the linux installer to install the bootloader on the same partition as the linux one instead of windows.

my friend is using wubi which integrates ubuntu with windows so it doesnt require it to be installed on a separate partition. thats if you want to avoid the hassle of dual booting.

i've been multibooting multiple linux installs and xp and win7 at one point without any hassle from grub.

that being said there are certain configurations that cause problems. but then more could be said against the windows bootloader that doesn't even attempt to recognise non-MS operating systems.

package management is about the one thing that makes the most difference between distros. from then on they are very similar.

Mandriva then opensuse personally I can't stand ubuntu but hey its all a personal preference.

Mandriva 2010 is just Wow. SO Mandriva then Fedora

I don't think there is any better or worse, it's basically the same things just managed and packaged differently and that's what's great about linux, you choose the distribution that's right for you.

Whats better than Ubuntu? Its like asking "Whats better than Espresso?", "Whats better than a beer?". Amongst the most opinionated people on the planet are Linux tech guys (yours truly included) because there is so much wonderful choice.

I in fact spent several weeks trying out distros before settling my faveourite so far (whoknows, it may change) Kubuntu (<3 KDE)

To this day I still have not got surround sound working properly in Ubuntu right back from 7.x to 9.10 :(

Now I just get horrible stutter almost like nothing is in sync everytime I change it to 5.1 but stereo works fine. I want all my speakers to work not just stereo :/ all articles I read on sound stutter doesn't work for me. I must be a complete noob.

Does mandriva have the same issues with sound? All this hype about Ubuntu fixing their sound issues in 9.10 made me download it but I fear it was a waste :/
