Kids wanted sushi and I did not plan. So made them some Eskort vienna sushi and a few crabsticks

Ha that’s something I haven’t considered for my kids that might just work.

Would need to make something more California roll like as they’ll probably still not fancy the nori.

Is that still just soy sauce? Or something sweeter?

Sorry didn't see this post. Yes just normal soya sauce. I always make a sweetish sauce with mayo, honey or syrup and bit of tomato sauce just for pink colour, that I add inside the sushi, just a line of it in the rice before I roll it. But sushi is all about the rice, if you make that good the rest does not matter. I normally leave 1/3 of the rice for the kids as they just make balls with it and put the sweet sauce or soya sauce on it.
And if you don't use raw fish, its pretty cheap if you have some chinese/korean supermarket near you.

Tonight I made chicken fillet, avo and cucumber sushi, and a few hand rolls. I have made fashion sandwiches and a few other shapes before, but it starts getting a big job if you go too fancy, These that I made tonight are the fastest.
Made about 60 pieces and 4 big hand rolls and cost was about R70. excluding the soya sauce, wasabi and ginger, because you don't buy that every time.

I would imagine a Tempura chicken with a crust could actually work quite well.

Actually thinking about it with the kids I could probably put a chicken strip or nugget in there and potentially convince them.

Yes anything. I have used bacon, nice cold pork belly and even boerewors. Only problem is things that are to short, When you cut the roll into pieces that end edges can fall out, so if its many short little pieces there is a bigger change of some falling out when you cut.
If you in JHB or PTA MarketKokoro have 4 branches and they cheap, you can order online from them too.
Raw salmon would be nice, but its expensive and I don't trust eating raw fish that I buy here in Gauteng to be still good to eat raw.
And if you go to one of these markets, get Bok choy. Its like less than R10 for a big bag. Yes it cooks away like spinach, but man it taste great. On its own cooked for 5min with a dash of soya sauce. or great with chicken stir-fry.

Most fish gets flash frozen right on the boat in modern times so it really isn’t such an issue getting it in land in much the same state as it would be coastal these days.

But yeah my main goal would be getting the kids to try sushi, so would avoid the raw stuff anyway.

Cool with Bok Choy / Pak Choi all the time.
