It's simply because they aren't terribly authentic. Adding curry to a stew doesn't make it an Indian dish. But a lot of South African cuisine is like that. I did a bobotie from a recipe the other day and the mince part basically amounted to 'chuck every curry sounding spice into the pan'. The result was palatable but had almost no discernible character.

I should have added that I get critiqued on the ethnicity of my dishes even though I never claimed it to be.

I always just called my stuff by loose definitions, like stew or curry which isn't strictly ethnic. As far as I know people in India don't even use the word curry.

In Durban so there will be variety this week.

Crab curry, fried fish, chicken, roti

Grilled lamb loin chops.

Roast baby marrow, pumpkin and red pepper (with melted cheese)

Cheese and mustard sauce on broccoli.

Rice.

How the **** I juggled all that is beyond me.

:D

That dish is suffering from multiple personality disorder.

Tonight is honey & mustard pork tenderloin with a carrot, crispy bacon and caramelized onion salad, with creamed Swiss chard...
