While I've got you here DJ:
What about bacon? I pretty much only use Bacon, butter and olive oil.

Off topic: Busy reading up on alcohol intake atm (got there from the cardiac wiki page)...kinda surprised at the numbers. Lots of countries reckon one can safely do 3x glasses of wine a day. o_O

Bacon? Awesome as part of a low carb diet. Might be bad for you if you're munching a lot of carbs though and have the resultant onset of cardiovascular inflammation. It is a long chain fatty acid that is chock full of omega 6. In health terms, it appears that the improper ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 is one of the contributive factors towards possible cardiovascular issues, however once again this is simply a contributive factor to underlying causes. In general terms, it is not really all that unhealthy though. Munch away at crispy bacon. Cook in bacon fat. Just don't base your entire diet around bacon and other omega 6 rich foods. If you want to healthily munch bacon, then just find a way to increase your omega 3 intake and you're sorted.

EDIT: let me explain, really briefly and simplistically, about the sugars and carbs thing - carbs and sugars when they enter the body raise your triglyceride levels. This is a bad thing. It lowers HDL cholesterol - this is a bad thing. It also pumps your body full of really small, dense LDL cholesterol, which is an awful thing, as they penetrate arterial walls and lead to further inflammation of the cardiovascular system.

Sugar and carbs are effectively the devil for health. Fat is not! Fat is good. Saturated fat is good. In fact hardly any of the cholesterol found in saturated fat is actually bad for you in any discernible way, to such an extent that if you are eating a high carb and high sugar diet, monitoring your saturated fat intake is pointless. The carbs and sugar are causing the real issues in any case and the long chain fatty acids will simply contribute further down the line. But remove the carbs and sugar, or at least lower it significantly, and you'll be fine.

Cholesterol is actually a good thing. Cholesterol is there to effectively repair the cardiovascular system. That is its job for the most part. Inflammation causes the real problems...

Thanks for the post DJ, makes me feel even worse about what I ate tonight :D

Fillet-o-fish and chicken nuggets.

Too lazy to cook tonight :(

Well in terms of carbs you're not all that bad. But the sugar content in there will combine with the carb intake to spike your insulin a bit. At the end of the day, the fried foods are fine as long as the oil they're fried in are not trans-fats and are not all that high in omega-6. Just don't get the fries and soda options or you're really doing a number on your body!

My big boerboel dog doesn't give a damn about firework noises :D He slept through it the whole night on last New Year's day.

I gave up soft drinks all together a while ago already, but can't not get the fries. If I order a meal from McD's then I get a cappuccino.

Thanks. All of it is as I said somewhat beyond me - I've got a cursory awareness of keto diets but thats it. You seem to be pretty well versed on this topic so I'll take your word for it until I'm a bit more clued up.

I see the guy has a TED talk too:

Clogged arteries happen when the inflammation reaches a stage where it physically blocks free movement through. Again, we're looking at the cause here, and that's inflammation. The cholesterol getting caught up there is not what is causing the problem - it exacerbates the problem, but a healthy cardiovascular system should have absolutely no issues with cholesterol of all kinds, shapes, sizes and densities. What causes inflammation? Trans-fats, sugar and excess carbohydrate intake. This much we now know. So steer clear of them as much as you can, up your fat intake to allow your body sufficient energy, and maintain protein levels.

What we know about cardiovascular health is changing at a rapid pace, and is turning it on its head. Remember that (in simplistic terms) cancer relies on glucose as well. Evidence shows that starving the body of glucose and turning your metabolism into one reliant on, and developing ketones, effectively starves cancer cells and can assist in treatment and importantly, prevention. The links between various pathological states and insulin is also now becoming abundant, so limiting insulin spikes due to sugar and carbs is essential to maintaining a healthy state of being.

Just a few months ago I scoffed at the idea. I've since been pouring over books, research, articles and blogs to discern the crap from the truth. And it is absolutely eye-opening. And you know me, I despise pseudo-science and hippie bullschit. This isn't though. It is probably one of the single greatest discoveries of the modern era. That discovery being that we were wrong for decades, and doctors who blindly followed the flawed results of a 1950s research project have been assisting in killing people since then.

For people interested in this, and particularly the science therof, I suggest readon Dr Peter Attia's stuff over at Eating Academy - http://eatingacademy.com/

Oh, and one last thing - people with cardiovascular issues are more often than not prescribed statin drugs to manage their cholesterol - in other words, to bring their cholesterol down. To this day, not a single piece of evidence points to raised cholesterol causing cardiovascular disease. The only study that did took place in the 1950s and was debunked, and further science shows that the issue is actually an underlying one, unrelated to the cholesterol. The cholesterol figures were incidental.

Now statin drugs have now been shown to actually calcify arteries. And they're prescribed based on bullschit science that has been debunked. Lowering your cholesterol does not assist in lowering your risk of coronary disease. Hence why only 50% of patients who present with cardiovascular issues have antiquated cholesterol "problems". The other 50% have something else the matter, and that is what prompted this sort of research. As it turns out, the 50% with high cholesterol had underlying issues as well - usually inflammation. And only small, dense LDL can cause inflammation. We know this. So what causes an increase in small, dense LDL, and contributes towards inflammation in other areas? Sugar and carbs. We know this.

So statin drugs prescribed to lower cholesterol are bullschit in terms of managing risk of cardiovascular disease...

Not true altogether. Not all nutrients act the same in the body...

Yeah but as a general idea. Just snack the whole day and only give the body what it needs.

Aside: Isn't there a thread for this diet issue?

Ah yes ... that is the name. What you think of his idea about nutrition? As a fan of Rump I can totally live with it .... but I do need my potato salad to wash it down with however :D

Big fan to some extent. In the weight loss thread I've gone into extensive detail about LCHF - check it out...
