So Apple announced a new Ipad with the new chip and pretty much all the new things in the Iphone 5.

But what is next? What will be in the next ipad? The normally release the new ipad in March or April I think but what do they have up their sleave for that one then?

Not sure if they'll release another iteration in March, maybe just some minor updates to the iPad 2 that don't affect its current pricing too much - I think they'll keep the iPad 2 around for a bit longer as an entry level device. The Mini I see being specifically targeted for education, which is why the entry level on that one is only WiFi - don't want students surfing and updating status while they're meant to be learning.

In all honesty though, who really knows with Apple - I was expecting a minor update to the 3rd Generation yesterday, nothing more than Lightning, but they surprised everyone with what was revealed for the 4th Generation. The push will always be for better performance overall, and better battery life, so those are a given - let's see who adopts Sharp's new IGZO display.

I'm guessing no on the 3D, Apple has shown in the past that they aren't fond of adopting new tech simply for the sake of it - as it becomes more of a standard, then maybe. With their recent acquisition of AuthenTec, biometric authentication can't be too far behind, especially as they push for corporate adoption.

Thinner and lighter with IGZO tech making it possible.

Lighter, better battery life and perhaps more storage would be the winner.

I find tablets too bloody heavy, especially with the cover.

Anodized aluminum shells is one obvious direction. The iPad Minis look great. Perhaps a new touch keyboard cover or some kind of other interface addition would be useful; similar to the Surface of course. I actually think they have a pretty big change lined up for it or they wouldn't have released the iPad4 so early in on the life of the retina model iPad.

I believe the mac mini gives us good insight into what the next generation ipad will look like. Smaller bezel, thinner, lighter, faster processor etc.

It would be nice if they made the next iPad more like Android, more ram, more customisable, more free apps, not locked to iTunes, allow users to plug it into any computer, usb host capabilities, 16:9 aspect ratio, widgets, Google maps etc

rofl jk :)

I would say more space and better battery.

They will probably improve the processor, display, battery, other internals but at least they should drop the 16GB and add a 128GB iPad then now we will be talking in my 32GB iPad I have 6-7GB free.
Most probably we should see a new iPad in a years time and have one iPad event rather than 2 a year

I really doubt there will be another update to the iPad in March. If there is an event at that date it will be for a new Mac Pro, a Macbook Air refresh and a sneak preview of iOS7. Yesterday was all about stealing the Microsoft Surface's thunder and standardising on the new connector. "And while we're doing that, oh well, let's just stick in the new chip".

The big limiting factor is battery life. Apple refuses to sell any iPad with less than 10 hours of battery in it. So sorry, all those asking why the Mini doesn't have a retina screen: it physically can't be done without making it twice as thick to fit in twice as much battery. That little problem has to be solved before we can expect to see major advances in the iPad line now.

Carbon fiber or Magnesium alloy.... maybe? New Sharp display as mentioned. More flash storage. Faster CPU/GPU. More flash storage is needed, 64GB is not enough.

Carbon fibre, I'm sure. Aluminium is getting long in the tooth and is not ideal by latest standards. Carbon fibre (Apple's own take one it ... I call it iFibre) is lighter and strong and has a nice feel to it (could even be a derivative of Kevlar). My XPS13 has it and I like it a lot. Jonny is going "iFibre" with next iPhone and iPad. The cold and heavy aluminium's days are over.

I exect a new iPad by March/April made from this fibre material. The new new iPad is actually more a fix (heat and LTE issues with a bump in muscle as a bonus to call it 4th gen) than a new iteration. I expect something more radical in March/April as I cannot see Apple hanging onto the new new iPad for a year with the competition making huge strides forward. Watch what the Nexus 10 will bring ... and all the new Wiindows RT variants ... no way Apple can wait a year.
