What's wrong with S.A rice?

Thank you, man. I will pay a visit this coming weekend.

But I don't understand why all the comments are oriented towards West/Nigeria.

Is East = West in South African dialogues?
If you come from Southern Africa(south africa excluded) = You are automatically Zimbabwean
If you come from any country up north on the african map = you are automatically Nigerian.

makes sense now?

Guys, I'm new to this country, I'm from East Africa.
I live in Cape Town.

I have been trying to cook rice, but I always end up throwing it into the bin.

Why? The rice feels like plastic, especially when it gets cold.
Someone told me the reason is that most S.A rice is not as quality as what we eat from East Africa.

All am asking is which/where brand of rice is the best? I have been told if I want quality rice I should look around grocery stores owned by Indians, Malawians etc. But can't find them in the neighbourhood.

Below is the rice which I have been trying to cook. I bought it from Pick n Pay. It tastes very bad.

What rice were you using previously?

More than likely you are used to Basmati or Jasmine rice and now picking up the long grain stuff only which is a little less...I guess refined.

Generally tend to buy the yellow bulk bags from Makro/Checkers but don't recall the brand name now.

1 cup size, 1/2 tsp salt....get to a boil turn heat down and put lid on.

10 min take off stove and leave lid on and 10 min later steamed perfection.

Yoh plastic rice, never knew the rice I ate was wrong. Tastic, Spekko, all the same to me.
Tastic and Spekko is the same rice!

Spekko was bought by Sasko/Pioneer Foods in the 2000s.

They decided to buy the best quality rice on the market. South Africa does not grow rice, so they have to buy from overseas. And depending on farming conditions, the best available quality changes.

Tastic/Spekko buy from the same sources. If I recall it was Thai rice, but I maybe wrong. I had a conversation with the Rice buyer at least 15 years ago, if not longer.
