I had an issue where a friend tried to voice call me on WhatsApp from Canada. Didn't work, just kept on ringing. Same when I called him. Viber did the trick, but I removed it as soon as the conversation was over.

How someone can travel internationally and rely only on free WiFi is beyond me.
