Hi There

Hope someone can help.

We have a 087 number that we want to use for Whatsapp Business but there is no way to get the code.

Can not get SMS on the number since it is VOIP and then the call function just throws out an error as per attached picture.

Does anyone know how to get around this as we have a unique number that we want to use Screenshot 2026-06-02 104817.png

Did you google "can voip number be whatsapp number" ?

Officially, WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business do not support VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) or virtual numbers for registration. The platform requires numbers linked to traceable telecom providers (mobile or fixed landline numbers) to combat spam. [1, 2, 3, 4]
However, many users bypass this using a specific workaround, though it comes with risks:

How the Workaround Operates
Some users successfully register virtual or VoIP numbers on WhatsApp Business by using voice verification rather than SMS: [1, 2]
  1. Enter the VoIP number during setup.
  2. Wait for the SMS verification timer to expire (usually 2-5 minutes).
  3. Select the "Call me" option to receive an automated voice call with the 6-digit verification code. [1, 2]

Risks and Limitations
While this may work initially, it is technically against WhatsApp Help Center Terms of Service. The following problems often occur: [1, 2, 3]
  • Account Banning: WhatsApp’s systems frequently detect and flag VoIP numbers as spam, resulting in temporary or permanent account suspension. [1, 2]
  • Verification Failure: Many VoIP providers block shortcode verification texts, and some automated call systems fail to reach virtual numbers. [1]
  • Future Lockouts: If you get logged out of the app or switch devices, you may be required to re-verify, which often fails if WhatsApp tightens its security policies. [1, 2, 3]
Because of these inconsistencies, it is highly recommended to use a standard mobile number or a fixed, verified landline to avoid losing your chat history and customer contacts.
