WhatsApp calling vs mobile voice

Problem is not price

Problem is quality of calls.

I use VIBER for months from my wife works magic. Moment when you step out in MTN or any other network, calls are unusable.

Vodacom to Vox network the call quality was very good for me.
The only problem I have with it at the moment is:

1) Latency is more, feels almost like an international call.
2) Doesn't work on my bluetooth handsfree (had to enable speaker on the phone in order to talk).

The article is incorrect, one does not need an invite anymore.

Anyone tried BBM. Been using voice for some time and it is exceptional

I find this voip call issue very interesting. So if WhatsApp calls are made then how come no interconnect fees are charged but when cell operator calls are made we pay interconnect fees?

The biggest problem I have with this is forcing the receiver to also pay for the call.

I find this hard to comprehend. It's really cheap to start with. The receiver can end the call whenever he/she likes.

If you're worrying about the cost of receiving calls on Whatsapp, you have bigger financial issues to attend to.

Because with VOIP, there is no interconnecting between networks. The network's voice technology is not being used at all.

Fortunate you. Viber sucks for me but Hangouts performs better. Overall Voip call quality is better than traditional voice call quality IMO

Well, there is actually interconnecting, but it's at the data level. IP has grown up with the paradigm that each network supports their own costs, whereas voice is (usually) calling-party-pays. (well, for most networks, anyway - there are some networks that try to force you to pay to send and receive their data)

In a sense, that's why both parties are paying for the Whatsapp call

I think that what's been missed here is that most of the time (I guess for the average user), your cell phone is near a wifi point, so your whatsapp voip calls are practically free. It's only when you're out of that capability that you would use 3g/lte and your more expensive data costs. Point is that it's fairly transparent and happens automatically. For me, I'm inside a wifi zone 22 hours out of 24.

Agreed. There's about 2 to 3x more smartphone usage on Wi-Fi than mobile data. It's also much more convenient to use a cellphone than a fixed line but the issue has been cost. Now, with "free calls" in buildings, I believe fixed and mobile operators will take a hit

If u take wifi into account then its even cheaper, I get free wifi at work , have wifi uncap at home and then there is many places in the cbd with free wifi as well

Whatsapp just needs include an option to allow the user to specify which delivery method they prefer when clicking on the call function. It's the only issue I have with whatsapp right now.
