Hi ,

Installed whatsapp on my phone recently so I can chat for 'free' keeping in mind that it will use data to download and send messages. I also installed the data usage app to monitor data usage on my phone because I know that apples are data hungry.

My question:

I sent and received a total of 6 short messages, this amounted to 2.85MB's..? Is this right, seems very high.

Any solutions/advice/comments?

That seems way to much. Maybe it updated in that time to? 6 messages definitely won't be that high. Monitor it to see if it uses any data when you aren't really active.
 
Whatsapp has its own "data usage" monitor, just goto settings and open usage.
Your data usage app might be measuring all data usage.

I have been using Whatsapp for +-2 years, (text / video /pics and locations), have sent 12 111 messages and received 12934 with a data count of 283MB sent and 235MB received, so less than 0.02MB (24KB per message). Whatsapp compresses data for videos etc as well.

So 2.85MB for 6 messages doesnt sound right :)
 
Definitely something wrong:

Iphone 4:

MSG Sent: 291
MSG Received: 401

Total Bytes sent: 4.1Mb
Total Bytes Received: 5.5Mb


Ipad2:

MSG Sent: 83
MSG Received: 70

Total Bytes sent: 321Kb
Total Bytes Received: 982Kb

Did you maybe send/receive pictures?
 
Try maybe check for an update? It should have downloaded the latest version though, after 1700sent and 1200 recieved(newish phone) ive only used 4MB..
 
Messages sent: 2775
Messages received: 2993

Total bytes sent: 4.7mb
Total bytes received: 10.9mb

I seriously doubt that usage was from Whatsapp alone.

Media bytes: 9mb up 15.6 down


so maybe check your Media bytes

iphones are known for their data usage... i find if i go to settings then general then network and switch off my 3G my data usage is way less!!!! then also to close all active apps, by double clicking on the "circle" button on the bottom of the phone all active apps will show, by then holding your finger on the app, it will show a "x" on all of them allowing you to delete the active ones....u can also go to whatsapp settings then usage and see the data usage . i am not a pro, this is just guidelines that i searched and found it to work for me :)
 
definitely something wrong there, Whatsapp doesn't use a lot of data.
Perhaps your data usage app included a total usage from other apps running.
